Samsung has an unbreakable smartphone screen, and we can’t wait to test it
You know how they called the Titanic unsinkable? It didn’t turn out to be a very smart way of describing that particular ship.
In completely unrelated news, Samsung has announced a smartphone screen that it calls “unbreakable,” which by definition means it can never, ever be broken under any circumstances.
The panel, Samsung claims, is a flexible OLED one with an “unbreakable substrate and an overlay window securely adhered to it.”
“The fortified plastic window is especially suitable for portable electronic devices not only because of its unbreakable characteristics, but also because of its lightweight, transmissivity and hardness, which are all very similar to glass,” said Hojung Kim, general manager of the Communication Team, Samsung Display Company. Foxconn, a major Apple parts supplier, broke ground in Wisconsin yesterday for its first plant in the United States.

Google’s latest software update for its Pixel 2 XL phones is innocuous on the surface, but it should alleviate some of the recently reported issues with the device’s OLED screen.
A large number of Pixel 2 XL owners say they’re experiencing significant “burn-in” issues — which leaves visible image residue on the screen after an image is shown for too long — as well as discoloration issues on their Pixel 2 XL phones.
Now, following a new update that was initially announced in late October, the Pixel 2 XL will decrease the maximum brightness and also fade out the navigations buttons at the bottom of the screen to combat the burn-in issue. Read more…
