Samsung has an unbreakable smartphone screen, and we can’t wait to test it

You know how they called the Titanic unsinkable? It didn’t turn out to be a very smart way of describing that particular ship. 

In completely unrelated news, Samsung has announced a smartphone screen that it calls “unbreakable,” which by definition means it can never, ever be broken under any circumstances. 

The panel, Samsung claims, is a flexible OLED one with an “unbreakable substrate and an overlay window securely adhered to it.”

“The fortified plastic window is especially suitable for portable electronic devices not only because of its unbreakable characteristics, but also because of its lightweight, transmissivity and hardness, which are all very similar to glass,” said Hojung Kim, general manager of the Communication Team, Samsung Display Company. Major Apple parts supplier Foxconn breaks ground for factory in Wisconsin

Foxconn, a major Apple parts supplier, broke ground in Wisconsin yesterday for its first plant in the United States.

The project located at Mount Pleasant in southeast Wisconsin is estimated to cost $10 billion and is projected to create thousands of jobs. It’s the largest economic development project in Wisconsin’s history, and when it is done, will manufacture LCD screen panels.

It’s uncertain whether Apple will use these screens, however, since it mainly sources them from Samsung, LG, and Japan Display. Its recent screens, additionally, have departed from traditional LCD panels — the electronics giant followed the lead of its chief competitor Samsung by incorporating OLED screens into its latest designs. Google’s Pixel 2 XL update should fix the screen burn issues

Google’s latest software update for its Pixel 2 XL phones is innocuous on the surface, but it should alleviate some of the recently reported issues with the device’s OLED screen. 

A large number of Pixel 2 XL owners say they’re experiencing significant “burn-in” issues — which leaves visible image residue on the screen after an image is shown for too long — as well as discoloration issues on their Pixel 2 XL phones. 

Now, following a new update that was initially announced in late October, the Pixel 2 XL will decrease the maximum brightness and also fade out the navigations buttons at the bottom of the screen to combat the burn-in issue. Read more…
