And for those who’ve ever lost a loved one, Lemony Snicket’s tale can feel like someone reaching out from the screen or page to assure you that you’re not alone in it.

The entire series of unfortunate events is centered around not one, but two devastating experiences of death. One is a recurring motif that begins every other episode with a brief from an unknown griever, addressing his lost love. The first reads: To Beatrice — darling, dearest, dead — and they only get more gut-wrenchingly frank from there.
