Original Content podcast: ‘Sharp Objects’ is a perfect TV mystery

It’s been an awful week in the news, but you know what’s still good? TV — especially “Sharp Objects”, the HBO limited series that aired over the past couple months. Granted, the show didn’t air on the streaming services that we normally focus on during the Original Content podcast, but Jordan’s been talking constantly about […]

The ‘Sharp Objects’ finale proved the dark power of generational trauma

This article contains spoilers for the finale of Sharp Objects

However much Sharp Objects seemed like a murder mystery, the finale turned out to be a devastating example of the generational harm done by abuse, neglect, and mental illness on families that don’t have the tools to manage their trauma.

Before Amma, there was Camille. Before Camille, Adora. And before Adora, there was Joya. Three generations of Preaker women and not one of them was untouched by the cruelty and madness of their town and place.

While Joya Preaker’s role in perpetuating and perhaps creating a cycle that led to her daughter and granddaughter becoming murderers was largely offscreen, her presence and influence on Adora felt oppressively present through the finale.  Read more…

‘Sharp Objects’ revealed the Wind Gap killer…and the other one, too

This article contains spoilers for the finale of HBO’s Sharp Objects.

By the time audiences got to the finale of Sharp Objects it was pretty clear that the central mystery of the show wasn’t exactly the point. Yes, the murders of Natalie Keene and Ann Nash were the reason Camille returned home to Wind Gap and incremental advancements in the case pushed the plot along, but the story was always more about Camille Preaker, her trauma, and the tragedies that have left physical and emotional scars on her entire person.

However, in a shocking twist that only unfurls in the last few moments of the series, Camille learns that the murders and her family’s painful legacy are in fact the same issue — both her mother and her sister are killers, with Adora killing Camille’s sister Marion and Amma being responsible for the murders of Natalie and Ann. These are the clues we missed about Adora on ‘Sharp Objects’

This article contains spoilers for Episode 7 of HBO’s Sharp Objects

On Sharp Objects, there was always something off about Adora. Her obsession with her social status, fluttery ways, and smothering approach to motherhood would never have earned her a Mother of the Year award, but as Episode 6 of the series revealed, there was something significantly darker lurking under her already bad mom facade.

Adora Crellin is a murderer whose Munchausen by proxy syndrome led her to slowly murder Marion over the course of her short life — and every sign points to her trying to sicken Amma as well.

Munchausen by proxy is medically known as Factitious disorder imposed on another (FDIA) and is usually diagnosed in parents or caregivers who believe that their children are extremely ill when they are actually healthy. The “goal” of the person with FDIA is to bask in the collective sympathy and attention that comes with parenting a sick child.  Read more…

Anyone can be the killer on ‘Sharp Objects,’ except the guy they’ll probably arrest

There are only two episodes of Sharp Objects to go and many watchers still don’t have a solid idea on who the Wind Gap killer actually is.
At the end of Episode 6, “Cherry,” the chief of police informs Detective Willis that a worker at the pig …

Hey Adora from ‘Sharp Objects’, what the hell is your damage?

TwitterFacebook

More than halfway through HBO’s Sharp Objects, no one really knows who killed the girl whose violent death sparked the events of the series. No one really knows what Amma’s deal is either, or if Camille is going to be able to handle the painful emotions that come with being back in her childhood home. No one knows much of anything.

Except for one thing. Everyone knows Adora Crellin is a complete monster.

Seriously, what is Adora’s damage? She’s a horrible, person-shaped monster in a fluffy pink shell with zero redeeming qualities and the personality of an arsenic-laced Ladurée macaron. The fact that she managed to live long enough to have at least one adult daughter without the town coming for her in the middle of the night with torches and pitchforks speaks volumes about how messed up Wind Gap society is. The scariest part of ‘Sharp Objects’ isn’t the murders. It’s the teens.

TwitterFacebook

Sharp Objects makes Wind Gap seem like an awful place to live. The primary economic activity is pig slaughtering, everyone is subject to the whims of a nightdress-wearing god queen whose clipped enunciation hides a deep well of narcissism, and two young girls have been brutally murdered in the past few years.

Still, all of that is more or less endemic to the kinds of towns where stories like Sharp Objects — stories where dead girls turn up in the town square and broken people try to piece their mysteries back together — take place.

Wind Gap has one up on all those other towns though. Wind Gap has mean teenagers, who are scarier than anything else in that hog-eat-hog town. Read more…
