Youth sports are often pure chaos. I’m the head coach of two girls’ basketball teams and I’ve seen my share of wild behavior. There are coaches cursing at referees like the NBA championship is on the line, and parents who think their 5-year-old is headed for a full basketball scholarship at Stanford just because she can dribble a ball without falling down. Ada Hegerberg becomes first woman to win the Ballon D’Or, gets asked if she can twerk

When Norwegian footballer Ada Hegerberg became the first woman to win the Ballon D’Or, she likely wasn’t expecting to get asked about her dancing prowess.  

Not only are we still living in an age where women are having “firsts,” we’re also still living in an era where men think it’s cool to ask women if they know how to twerk just as they’re accepting a historic award. 

After Hegerberg delivered a speech with an empowering message to young girls, French DJ Martin Solveig decided it’d be a great idea to ask her — after she’d literally just been named the best female footballer in the world — est-ce que tu sais twerker?“, which means: “Do you know how to twerk?” Read more…

Google got rid of ‘Smart Compose’ pronouns because humans are sexist

Unlike a lot of email signatures these days, Gmail doesn’t specify its preferred pronoun.

To avoid perpetuating gender bias, Gmail stopped its “Smart Compose” text prediction feature — which provides likely ends of sentences and other phrases for Gmail users while composing emails — from suggesting pronouns, Reuters reported Tuesday

Google told Mashable that Smart Compose launched in May with that bias-averting policy already in place. However, Gmail product manager Paul Lambert only recently revealed this intentional move in interviews with Reuters.  Read more…

Tennis star Serena Williams accused the U.S. Open final umpire, Carlos Ramos, of sexism after she was penalized for calling him a “liar” and a “thief.” Williams lost the match in straight sets to 20-year-old Naomi Osaka.

Williams said the incident was a case in point of the glaring double standards according to which male and female tennis players are judged.  Read more…
