There’s more evidence that a Razr with a foldable screen is coming

TwitterFacebook

Well this is flipping fantastic.

Motorola has previously been devilishly mum about rumored plans for a new smart, foldable flip phone — it responded to reports that a Razr for the foldable screen era was coming with an animated shruggie.

But now, Motorola VP of Global Product Dan Dery has confirmed to Engadget that a foldable Motorola smart phone is on the way — albeit still somewhat coyly.

At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Dery told Engadget, regarding phones with foldable screens, that Motorola has “no intention of coming later than everybody else in the market.” Read more…

You can buy used Cellebrite iPhone hacking tools for cheap on eBay

Hacking a smartphone just got a whole lot cheaper.

A tool once favored by law enforcement for pulling data off locked phones is now available to the general public. We can’t imagine the Israel-based company behind the Cellebrite hacking device is all that pleased with its newly expanded customer base, but here we are. There’s not much it can do about it at the moment, as the sales are taking place on eBay — where a quick search shows numerous used models listed for prices as low as $50.

According to Forbes, which first reported the news, a brand new Cellebrite device will set law enforcement back around $6,000. Things are quite a bit cheaper on the online auction site, where one seller has what appear to be 10 used models for sale ranging in price between $50 to $70.  Read more…

OnePlus CEO: In the 5G era, storage recedes

TwitterFacebook

BARCELONA—The 5G era may be the end of the storage race in phones. As Samsung deploys its 1TB Galaxy S10+ and SanDisk shows off a 1TB microSD card, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau said on a panel here at MWC19 that super-fast cloud access may make these giant levels of local storage obsolete.

“People are now concerned with the size of storage on their device for the sake of storing more photos, but [5G] will allow for more immediate cloud storage,” Lau said. “That will allow people to no longer focus on whether the phone has 128GB of 512GB of storage, and it will enable a total change in our photography experience on the device.” Read more…

T-Mobile pledges unlimited 5G, aims at first half of 2019

TwitterFacebook

BARCELONA—Neville Ray always gives it to me straight. T-Mobile’s CTO has been struggling with when the company’s 5G network is going to launch, giving some mixed signals that led to some confusion.

“We’d like to do something in the first half [of 2019],” Ray said. “We’re still trialing and experimenting.”

The reason for the date confusion has to do with spectrum licenses and chipset availability. During the first half of the year, the only cell phone chips available won’t support T-Mobile’s long-range 600MHz network. But they will support its limited 28GHz, short-range millimeter-wave spectrum holdings. Read more…

Nobody cared about Meizu’s hole-less Zero phone at MWC 2019

TwitterFacebook

After a few days of looking at foldable phones at Mobile World Congress 2019, I’m already kinda sick of them.

Look, I know foldable phones are cool — Huawei’s Mate X was without a doubt the showstopper at the mobile show in Barcelona — but I’ve said it a zillion times and I’ll repeat it a zillion more times: they’re far, far, from ready

So I went in search of another highly sought after phone: the Meizu Zero, aka the phone without any buttons, charging ports, speaker grilles, or holes of any kind.

As it turns out, nobody seems to care about this vision for phones.

Qualcomm is building 5G into chipsets and PCs

TwitterFacebook

BARCELONA—Qualcomm is taking the next step into 5G, promising 5G-enabled Windows laptops and to integrate 5G into next year’s Snapdragon smartphone platform. Both Qualcomm’s 8cx 5G chipset for PCs and its unnamed future integrated phone chipset will rely on its new X55 modem, which supports all of the current globally planned 5G networks.

The new mobile phone platform (let’s call it the Snapdragon 865, although it may be a new product line for 5G) will be ready for commercial devices in early 2020, and Samsung will use the new platform in future products—probably the Galaxy S11.

“We look forward to introducing a device on this platform in the near future,” Dr. June Hee Lee, head of Samsung’s technology strategy team said. Read more…
