Crappy in-display fingerprint readers are ruining new phones

TwitterFacebook

In-display fingerprint readers — biometric sensors embedded within the screens of many new phones — are garbage. They must be purged from all future devices unless they get significantly better soon.

There, I said it, and boy does it feel great to get that off my chest. Because it’s true.

As a tech reviewer, I’m in the enviable position of being able to test out new devices before they trickle down to everyone.

Sometimes it’s great and sometimes it’s not. It sucked to live without a headphone jack on the iPhone 7, but was life-changing to use AirPods before anyone else could. It was really fun to use phones like the Vivo Nex S and Oppo Find X, with its motorized cameras, and even the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3, with its fidgety sliding design. Read more…

Vivo’s Apex 2019 is all screen and no holes

TwitterFacebook

In February 2018, China’s Vivo was one of the first companies to show a phone that’s literally all screen on the front — no notches for the selfie camera, thin bezels all around.

Now, the company has launched a successor to that phone, called the Vivo Apex 2019 — and it takes the same concept to its logical conclusion.

Vivo actually soft-launched the Apex 2019 in January, but the company has now brought the actual device to an event in Hong Kong (via The Verge)

Vivo’s Apex 2019 has no physical buttons, which have been replaced by pressure sensors which give haptic feedback when you touch them. The standard USB port has been removed and replaced with a Magport: a magnetic connector that clings to the back of the phone to charge it. There’s no SIM card slot — you have to use an eSIM instead. The phone’s screen doesn’t have a notch, and it has a new kind of fingerprint scanner, which lets you unlock the phone by placing a finger anywhere on the screen instead of a designated spot. There’s no speaker grille, either: The sound is delivered by vibrating the screen, a technology used in the original Apex phone as well. Read more…

Over a quarter of U.S. adults now own a smart speaker, typically an Amazon Echo

U.S. smart speaker owners grew 40 percent over 2018 to now reach 66.4 million – or 26.2 percent of the U.S. adult population – according to a new report from Voicebot.ai and Voicify released this week, which detailed adoption patterns and device market share. The report also reconfirmed Amazon Echo’s lead, noting the Alexa-powered smart […]

Oppo F11 Pro hands-on: Huge, notch-less screen and a 48-megapixel camera

TwitterFacebook

You may not be very familiar with Chinese smartphone maker Oppo, so here’s what you should know: The company makes pretty good phones and sells them at an affordable price. It also has ties with OnePlus, and the company’s F-series phones are often precursors for the next OnePlus phone.

With that in mind, I present to you the new, Oppo F11 Pro. I’ve had some limited hands-on time with it, but — like previous Oppo F-series phones — it’s a mix of pretty powerful features and a decent price.

Don’t expect too much, though. Fancy tech like Oppo’s 10x optical zoom is nowhere to be seen, and the Oppo F11 Pro (despite the “pro” moniker) is not a device that can measure up to the most powerful flagships of today. On the other hand, certain features make it an interesting contender in the amazingly competitive mid-ranger arena.  Read more…

Feel like your phone’s spying on you? You’re not alone

TwitterFacebook

After the Cambridge Analytica scandal, there’s no question that our personal data is being collected. Exactly how tech companies gather information about our personal lives remains unclear. Can our devices be controlled? Are microphones and cameras being turned on? Though a definitive answer is hard to explain; Tega Brain and Sam Lavigne teamed up to create the The New Organs— an online project showing what it’s like to live under digital surveillance. 5G phones are here but there’s no rush to upgrade

This year’s Mobile World Congress — the CES for Android device makers — was awash with 5G handsets. The world’s No.1 smartphone seller by marketshare, Samsung, got out ahead with a standalone launch event in San Francisco, showing off two 5G devices, just before fast-following Android rivals popped out their own 5G phones at launch […]
