How far home printing has come in fewer than four decades will astound you

TwitterFacebook

Whether you’re an aspiring novelist who goes through reams of paper printing 18 versions of your latest manuscript, a student racing to finish a last-minute paper, or a design professional fiddling with various layouts for a piece of print collateral, there are a variety of scenarios in which home printing technology is a godsend in our modern day and age.

Today, we take the ability to print documents easily and in the comfort of our own homes for granted. But even as recently as 30 years ago, home printing was considered a luxury — and 50 years ago, it was unheard of.

Let’s dig into the evolution of this highly useful technology, and how it has made its way into our homes and (printed) history books. Read more…

The investment inequality that’s just as important as the gender wage gap

TwitterFacebook

The gender pay gap — or the statistic that women make approximately 80 cents for every dollar that men make — is a well-documented phenomenon, backed up by data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the American Association of Women

Arguably as pressing an issue is the gender investment gap: Many women are less prepared for long-term financial health than their male counterparts.

Women have the potential to add $12 trillion to the global economy over the course of the next decade, so helping them use their assets advantageously is a win-win for all. Below, we take a deeper look at the gender investment gap and how to begin to close it. Read more…

#TheDifferenceSheMakes: Celebrate the women who inspire you in this vertical video contest

TwitterFacebook

All around the world, incredible and ordinary women are sparking positive change within their communities and homes. Their achievements range from small and everyday — one woman making an impact upon a classroom or neighbourhood, for example — to the extraordinary, such as innovators who are leading movements, building businesses, or volunteering their time to make our planet a better place.

To tell these inspiring stories on an international stage, Nespresso Talents, a storytelling contest, is inviting aspiring filmmakers to create videos that celebrate women and their achievements, both big and small. The contest, now in its third year, aims to highlight talent and artistry through vertical video, a format fit for the best viewing experience in a mobile-first world, whilst supporting and nurturing young talent in film. This year’s contest also happens to align with International Women’s Day, coming up on March 8, which is an ideal moment to highlight these empowering stories. Read more…

Why you should learn about blockchain before everyone else does

TwitterFacebook

From niche technical publications to watercooler conversations to the corporate boardroom, blockchain has become the latest buzz-worthy technology that practically everybody is talking about.

But if you stopped the average Joe on the street to ask, What exactly is blockchain?, chances are  you’d get some head-scratching and a few vague references to Bitcoin as a response.

Consider: Blockchain is being touted as the most disruptive invention since the internet itself; isn’t it worth learning the basics about what it is and how it works?

RMIT is the first Australian university to offer a dedicated blockchain course online, Developing Blockchain Strategy, and it’s a great place to start expanding your knowledge set. The eight-week course gives students the skills they need to apply blockchain to a 21st century workforce, regardless of their expertise or industry.  Read more…

Here’s the easiest way you can help end the global water crisis

TwitterFacebook

Many people pay little attention to the ubiquitous role tap water plays in their daily lives: a quick rinse of a toothbrush in the morning, filling up a water bottle before the gym, or the simple pleasure of a hot shower after a long day.

But in some places around the world, the relationship between the average household and a supply of clean water looks drastically different. In fact, one in nine people worldwide lacks access to safe water. In some developing nations, people walk up to six hours every day simply to gather enough water for their families to survive.

“It is almost an overwhelming concept — a crisis of this scale,” explains Julie LaGuardia, head of brand partnerships for Water.org. “It’s hard to imagine what hundreds of millions of people not having access to water looks like. In many parts of the modern world, people don’t experience that [hardship] in any given day. So it can be difficult to understand, or relate to.” Read more…

How mobile photography technology has evolved over two decades of phone cameras

TwitterFacebook

Picture this: The sun is sinking below the horizon, and it’s going to be a stunner of a sunset — one for the books (or at the very least, for Facebook). You scramble for your phone to capture those vivid, cotton candy-coloured skies, but the image simply doesn’t translate on your screen as beautifully as it appears IRL.

In the nascent days of mobile phone photography, this was a common scenario. But today’s smartphone cameras are capable of capturing pro-grade images in any number of difficult lighting conditions — even, in some cases, underwater. The best part? These cameras fit right in your pocket, enabling you to preserve precious memories in remarkable detail without dragging a whole kit around. Read more…

Why solving the world’s water crisis means more than just quenching thirst

TwitterFacebook

Six hours. For some, this amount of time is a typical workday spent tapping away at a laptop. For others, it’s a Sunday spent watching football and bonding with family.

But in some parts of the world, six hours is the amount of time a child may have to wait for a glass of clean drinking water. Women, kids, and other members of underserved communities often journey far from their village in search of the nearest water source or wait in long lines to collect it. This layer of the global water crisis — the sheer amount of time stolen from families who have to struggle to keep clean water in the house — is often overlooked. Read more…

5 entrepreneurs who are future-proofing the global food waste problem

TwitterFacebook

Most people know that global hunger is a pressing issue — but what you may not know is that food waste is equally concerning.

This doesn’t seem to make sense: How is it that so many go hungry if there’s so much usable food heading to landfills? If you think the issue of food waste is counterintuitive, you’re not alone. The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals outline a series of objectives to tackle global problems including hunger and food waste, among others.

There are a number of entrepreneurs who recognize that food waste is an unacceptable problem in our modern world — and they’re doing their part to bring the UN’s SDGs like zero hunger, sustainable agriculture practices, and sustainable consumption and production to fruition. Below are five individuals who are making a serious impact on every level of the food waste chain — from farming and agriculture to supermarkets and retail, all the way down to the individual consumer.
