A massive group of Astros fans pulled off an impressive show of teamwork on Friday when they launched a coordinated effort to return a lost hat to its owner.

Per UPI, it all went down at a massive, multi-story parking garage in downtown Houston where fans gathered to celebrate the Astros and their World Series win.

When a woman dropped her hat from her spot multiple stories above the parade, fans came together to toss her hat from level to level, ensuring it made a safe return to its owner.

An American woman won the NYC Marathon for the first time in 40 years

TwitterFacebook

Shalane Flanagan crossed the New York City Marathon finish line just a few minutes shy of two-and-a-half hours after she started.

It was fast enough to win the women’s race portion of the annual competition, making the 36-year-old runner from Portland, Oregon the first American woman to bring home a victory in 40 years. The last time that happened was in 1977, when Miki Gorman won — for the second year in a row — with a time of 2:43:10.

Flanagan’s win shut down a record-breaking moment for the women’s race runner-up, Mary Keitany. A Keitany win would have made it four in a row for the Kenyan runner and defending champ, an honor that only a handful of NYC Marathon competitors can claim. Read more…

The cover of a June 2014 issue of the magazine featured the headline “Your 2017 World Series Champs” with a photo of Astros outfielder George Springer, who, ya know, just won the 2017 World Series MVP award.

TwitterFacebook

Oh poor Papa John.

The NFL protests are hurting his pizza chain’s sales, Papa John’s founder and CEO John Schnatter complained on a conference call Wednesday, even though he thought the league had the problem “nipped in the bud” last year. The company said on the call that it was the NFL’s biggest sponsor.

Colin Kaepernick and other players were making a statement about police brutality and racial inequality — but did they even stop to think about how their actions might affect in-store sales of multinational pizza corporations?  Read more…

The Golden Knights, live gambling and the future of live sports attendance

One of the biggest early season NHL stories has been the success of the expansion Las Vegas Golden Knights. If they can maintain anything close to current attendance and demand levels, their sports-gambling-friendly approach may do more than just help the NHL solve the “warm-weather problem” — it could be the biggest boon to event attendance since the advent of the dome.
