Dark and Light Side versions of ‘The Last Jedi’ are a thing — but not in the U.S.

You may be a Last Jedi superfan. You may have seen Rian Johnson’s galaxy-sized hit five, 10, 15 times. But will you ever truly see it unless you’ve chosen to be on the Light Side or the Dark Side — with special effects to match?

Light Side and Dark Side versions of Last Jedi are a thing in Japan. In the rest of the world, FOMO is a thing.

The special screenings, first reported by THR, come courtesy of 4DX, which describes itself as “the world’s first 4D cinema company.” Launched in South Korea, 4DX seems the epitome of gimmicky — it tilts and rumbles the seats, it sprays smells and fog, it adds wind and strobe and lightning effects. It can even blow bubble into the theater. Read more…

‘Last Jedi’ gets thumbs up from 89% of viewers, says new poll

TwitterFacebook

Get ready for a shock, internet veterans: the folks loudly complaining about the latest Star Wars movie represent a tiny vocal minority.

That’s according to a data from SurveyMonkey, revealed here exclusively to Mashable. An audience poll of 4,441 U.S. adults found that of people who’ve seen Star Wars: The Last Jedi, a whopping 89 percent either loved or liked it. (Loves and likes were evenly divided.)

Interestingly, the 89 percent figure stays the same whether respondents described themselves as a “big” Star Wars fan or a regular fan. Even among self-described non-Star Wars fans — whom, one presumes, must have wandered into the wrong theater — 81 percent loved or liked The Last JediRead more…

‘Last Jedi’ haters are nothing new. Plenty of fans hated ‘Empire Strikes Back’ too

TwitterFacebook

The darker middle chapter of an expected trilogy was a crushing disappointment for many Star Wars fans. People had waited years for this sequel, and what did they get? Two main characters became uncomfortably connected. A whole middle-of-the-movie subplot went nowhere. And Luke Skywalker seemed irrevocably tainted after a surprise revelation.

We speak not of The Last Jedi, which — mild spoiler alert — has some fans upset in part over aspects of the above. Rather we speak of initial reaction to what is now widely recognized as the best and most artistically important Star Wars movie, The Empire Strikes BackRead more…

When Han Solo died towards the end of The Force Awakens in 2015, it was a blow to fans’ hearts. But it was also to be expected.

Harrison Ford had been agitating for years for his scoundrel smuggler to be killed off in a way that would “bring some weight to this thing.” Ford was so cranky about the role that made his career, it was almost a mercy killing. Read more…

All 10 Star Wars movies, ranked — including ‘The Last Jedi’

TwitterFacebook

With the release of The Last Jedi on Friday, Lucasfilm marks a major milestone. Believe it or not, this is the 10th Star Wars movie released in theaters.

Yeah, 10 movies, not just the eight Skywalker saga films plus Rogue One. There’s one red-headed cinematic stepchild Lucasfilm would rather forget. Still, 10 is a significant achievement. One worth commemorating with — what else? A top 10 list!

This, then, is the first ever ranking by a viewer of all 10 Star Wars movies. Naturally, you’re free to disagree with the placements. This is the start of a conversation, not the end.  Read more…

‘The Last Jedi’ zero-spoiler review: See it. Just see it.

TwitterFacebook

There has been an awakening of Star Wars reviews. Have you felt it?

At 12pm ET on Tuesday December 12, hardcore fans of the Star Wars franchise faced a choice as perilous as any Jedi. The Disney embargo for Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi dropped, and seemingly every news outlet across the planet rushed out their review at once.

But if you want, nay, need to experience every tiny surprise a new Star Wars movie has to offer, how can you read such a thing? Even if you’re not entirely spoilerphobic, reviewers often get carried away in their nerdiness; who knows what they might reveal?

The Last Jedi is especially difficult in this regard, because this is a film with so much going on. In my full review, I’ve taken care to avoid all of the film’s many big spoilers and all plot details after the first 20 minutes of a film that lasts 151 minutes (but feels about half that long — damn, it goes fast.)  Read more…

John Boyega says ‘The Last Jedi’ will tell us ‘exactly which way’ the Finn/Poe relationship is going

TwitterFacebook

There has been an awakening — have you felt it?

No, we’re not talking about Rey’s burgeoning Force powers; we mean the chemistry between Resistance fighter Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and rebel Stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega) — aka the pairing that the internet has affectionately dubbed “StormPilot.”

The ship that launched a thousand memes has been the talk of the interwebs since The Force Awakens, and Oscar Isaac recently stoked the fires by admitting that he’s “very open to those possible storylines” that might see Poe in a same-sex relationship. But will we actually see any evidence of attraction on screen?  Read more…
