‘Last Jedi’ director begs angry fanboys to remake movie: ‘Please please please’

Did you hear? The Last Jedi is an Objectively Bad Movie.
Never mind that it raked in $1.3 billion worldwide to become the 11th highest grossing film of all time (and second most successful Star Wars film ever), or that it was a critical sensati…

‘Last Jedi’ director strikes back at Star Wars ‘manbabies’

TwitterFacebook

It is a period of civil war in Star Wars fandom.

We’re nearly seven months on from the release of The Last Jedi, and a certain very vocal minority of fans — you know, the kind who think a film can ruin their childhood — just can’t let it go. And now the director is striking back.

The catalyst for this fresh round of warfare is the fact that Kelly Marie Tran, who played Resistance mechanic Rose Tico, mysteriously deleted all her Instagram posts this week. Tran has not explained why she did this; Mashable has reached out to her publicist for comment. Read more…

Congrats to ‘The Last Jedi’ director Rian Johnson on the #1 GDPR meme

TwitterFacebook

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… we are updating our privacy policy.

In the run-up to GDPR, the European Union’s new data privacy directive (which goes into effect Friday), people across the internet have been bombarded with emails and pop-ups from brands disclosing updates to their terms of service.

Of course, this means there have also been a lot of memes on the subject. Here’s a personal favorite:

Luke Skywalker’s darker journey in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ was just good storytelling

TwitterFacebook

It’s been said before, it’ll be said again: Let the past die. Kill it if you have to. That’s what Rian Johnson did.

Luke Skywalker’s gruff, disillusioned old man in Star Wars: The Last Jedi left a lot of fans angry. But writer/director Johnson had a good reason for going that route, as he articulated very well during a South by Southwest panel this week.

“If you look at any classic hero’s myth that is actually worth its salt, at the beginning of the hero’s journey, like with King Arthur, he pulls the sword from the stone and he’s ascendant — he has setbacks but he unites all the kingdoms,” Johnson told the SXSW crowd (h/t The Hollywood Reporter).  Read more…

‘The Last Jedi’ director Rian Johnson reacts to Stormy Daniels’ review of the movie because that’s where we are now

TwitterFacebook

The porn star Stormy Daniels, who reportedly had an affair with Donald Trump, gave a short review of Star Wars: The Last Jedi on Twitter in December, and the director has finally responded.

Daniels voiced her opinions on the latest Star Wars movie before she entered the spotlight over the last couple of weeks, sharing an explicit “Fuck you Rian Johnson,” pegging her perceived negative thoughts of the film on its director. A month plus later, Johnson responded with a starry-eyed emoji.

Fuck you Rian Johnson.

‘The Last Jedi’ director offers perfect response to critics of the movie’s ending

TwitterFacebook

Consider yourself warned if you haven’t seen The Last Jedi yet: there are spoilers within.

Cranky Star Wars fans, Rian Johnson has had enough of your guff.

The director of The Last Jedi took to Twitter on Friday to clap back at fans who are furious at the trick Luke Skywalker pulls on Kylo Ren in the movie’s climactic fight scene on the planet Crait.

During that battle, Kylo confronts what turns out to be a Force projection of Luke. The real deal is actually back on Ahch-To. A younger-looking Luke (with his old-school blue lightsaber — a major clue!) puts Kylo through the emotional ringer before blowing his mind by peacing out into thin air.  Read more…

‘Star Wars’ stars totally shut down the men who edited the film to remove all the women

TwitterFacebook

If you’re going to spend a large amount of time editing a whole new cut of The Last Jedi that removes pretty much all the women, you’d better be prepared for some feedback.

Lots of feedback.

Earlier in the week, Pedestrian reported that a 46-minute cut of The Last Jedi had been shared anonymously on Pirate Bay. The main difference to the original, it turned out, was that pretty much all the female characters had been removed.

Actress Priscilla Page made her feelings about the whole thing pretty clear:

You can thank Carrie Fisher for her zingers in ‘The Last Jedi’

TwitterFacebook

Carrie Fisher did more than reprise her role as General Leia Organa in the newest installment of the Star Wars franchise.

Before her death at age 60 last year, she brought her own wit and humor with her into The Last Jedi — and director Rian Johnson was all about it. He included some one-liners that have that characteristic Fisher bite, which she wrote herself.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Johnson credited Fisher with at least two quippy lines. The first was a line about her new hairstyle she makes to Mark Hamill’s character, Luke Skywalker. Read more…

Here’s how Rian Johnson feels about that ‘Last Jedi’ backlash

TwitterFacebook

Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has responded to his film’s polarized responses, and while his remarks may not settle the debate, it turns out that’s not what he wants to do.

Johnson responded to a fan on Twitter by expressing that his intent was never to divide Star Wars fans, but that spirited conversations show the series is growing and changing – as are its fans.

The goal is never to divide or make people upset, but I do think the conversations that are happening were going to have to happen at some point if sw is going to grow, move forward and stay vital.

‘The Last Jedi’ director Rian Johnson explains that inspiring final shot

TwitterFacebook

Spoiler alert: This story contains major spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is all about moving on from the past – but its very last shot references a certain farm boy who’s been around since the very beginning.

No, Luke Skywalker doesn’t appear in that last scene, which shows a little boy casually using the Force to do his chores. He’s dead by that point in the story, having spent the last of his energy on a virtual battle with Kylo Ren.

But his legend lives on. Just before that final shot, that little boy and his friends were recounting stories about Luke. That’s the point of the ending, and why writer-director Rian Johnson told Entertainment Weekly it’s “mostly about Luke.” Read more…
