Presenting everything we think will happen in ‘The Last Jedi’

TwitterFacebook

LOS ANGELES — Breathe. Just breathe.

On Saturday night, the wait will finally be over — at least for the hundreds of guests (including your humble scribe) gathered at the Shrine Auditorium in Downtown L.A. for the world premiere of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

After that, I will enter Star Wars reviewer exile, unable to publish anything beyond vague tweet-length impressions of the movie until the review embargo lifts next week — at a time that has already got us making a galaxy-shaking prediction. So this moment is my last chance to put any educated guesses at the movie’s content on the record. Read more…

Who’s the least popular Star Wars character ever? Hint: It’s not Jar Jar

TwitterFacebook

Princess Leia Organa wins the Star Wars popularity contest. That should come as no surprise to anyone, but it’s nice to have the evidence in black and white. As for the loser, there’s a twist.

A December poll from Morning Consult asked 2,200 folks about their opinions on Star Wars movies, then cross-tabulated that with their demographics and political preferences. We’ll be pulling details out of this poll for weeks; but for now, let’s concentrate on the characters.

The poll asked respondents their opinions on 25 major characters from the saga. Leia came out on top with a 73% favorability rating — although Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca, Yoda and R2-D2 were all within 2% of her, which happens to be the poll’s margin of error.  Read more…

‘Last Jedi’ director: I’m not copying ‘Empire Strikes Back,’ but I’m also not not copying it

TwitterFacebook

Back in the innocent days of December 2015, some critics of The Force Awakens believed the movie to be a “remake” of the original 1977 Star Wars

These people were wrong — one desert planet orphan does not a remake make — and we obsessives at Mashable took the time to prove this with a shot-by-shot comparison.

Still, as is often the case with reductive reasoning, the “remake” label stuck in the mind of many moviegoers. So you’d think when it came to the Force Awakens sequel The Last Jedi, director Rian Johnson might take care to avoid all comparisons between his film and that best-loved Star Wars sequel, 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back.   Read more…

‘Last Jedi’ director says porgs are a ‘nightmare’ to work with

TwitterFacebook

It isn’t just you. The internet has gone even more crazy than normal for porgs, those cute puffin-like creatures we’ve seen for two seconds, max, in The Last Jedi trailers.

Most of that is coming from Twitter, where porgs were trending Tuesday thanks in part to the addition of porg emoji to porg hashtags. And Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has been stoking the flames by using a hashtag beloved by fans, #porgnation.

As part of a social media Q&A offensive, Johnson also had this to say about his feathered friends: they were harder to direct than Chewbacca. Read more…

‘The Last Jedi’ will be longest Star Wars movie ever

TwitterFacebook

As Internet culture gets more and more focused on  short-term entertainment — heck, we can barely sit through a three-minute YouTube short — its favorite movie franchise is paradoxically getting longer and longer.

The Last Jedi, episode 8 in the Star Wars Skywalker saga, clocks in at a weighty 151 minutes and 38 seconds. That’s according to an official release from the British Board of Film Classification, which has already seen the film and also warns us to expect “moderate violence.” (No word on whether that classification includes scenes of Wookiees eating porgs.)

‘The Last Jedi’ will explore how female bosses are treated in the workplace

From her photos, we already knew Laura Dern’s new character in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Resistance Vice-Admiral Amilyn Holdo, was unusual for the franchise. In her well-coiffed violet hair and elegant matching gown, she’s unlike anyone the galaxy fa…

Come on, of course Luke and Leia will reunite in ‘The Last Jedi’

TwitterFacebook

There are some questions that answer themselves the moment you ask them. Case in point: “Will Luke & Leia reunite?”

That’s the query gracing the main cover of Entertainment Weekly‘s special on the upcoming Star Wars sequel The Last Jedi, hitting newsstands Monday. The magazine doesn’t exactly answer this  question about the galaxy’s most famous twins — spoilers, sweetie! — other than to say there’s a “still a chance these two could find each other again.”

Given that this story was produced with the total cooperation of Lucasfilm, among other pointers from the trailers, we’ve got a very good feeling about their chances.  Read more…

‘Last Jedi’ posters have fans concerned Luke is going to the Dark Side

TwitterFacebook

With 38 days to go until The Last Jedi officially opens, Lucasfilm — and Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill — are setting their phasers to “troll.”

A new international poster advertising the IMAX 3D version of the movie consists of two giant panels. One has a white background and features characters and objects we think of as light side (Rey, Finn, Poe, Leia, Rose, the Millennium Falcon, a blue lightsaber); the other has a grey background and pro-First Order, Dark Side figures (Kylo Ren, Captain Phasma, Star Destroyers, TIE fighters and a red lightsaber.)

Here’s the thing: Luke features prominently in both panels.  Read more…

John Boyega has heard your Finn theories about ‘The Last Jedi’ and he has some notes

TwitterFacebook

You think Game of Thrones has fan theories? That’s cute. Nowhere’s got fan theories like the galaxy far, far away. (I blame Supreme Leader Snoke, but that’s just my theory.)

Many of these theories currently concern the notion that there is more than one Jedi in The Last Jedi. Director Rian Johnson keeps shooting that whole thing down — Luke is specifically named the last Jedi in the opening crawl of The Force Awakens, he notes. This ancient, lightsaber-twirling, Force-filled order has no other official adherents, and Luke thinks it must end.

Luke going back to the Millennium Falcon will give every nerd the feels for years

TwitterFacebook

No matter what else happens in The Last Jedi, we now know it contains the moment every fanboy and fangirl has been waiting to see for years: Luke Skywalker re-entering the Millennium Falcon.

The scene dropped Wednesday night in a re-edited version of last month’s first full trailer. Luke is seen walking into the famous Falcon cockpit, a place we haven’t seen him — shockingly — since the original 1977 Star Wars, latterly called A New Hope. (Yes, he came aboard the Falcon after falling down a giant tube in Cloud City, but not in anything more than a delirious state).
