Ranking memes, ranked

The internet, as a whole, likes to rank things. (We certainly do.) But no ranking ever feels 100 percent perfect, mostly because they don’t exactly leave room for nuance. Stupid nuance!

That’s part of the logic behind the ranking meme, which is making the rounds on Twitter this week. How can one rank all the Lorde songs when they are all so different?

One fundamental truth emerges, though. It may be too hard to rank all the Lorde songs, but there’s still one that’s the best. (It’s “Supercut.”) And that’s the other component of the ranking meme — a ranked list might feel like parsing apples and oranges, but there’s always one perfect farmer’s market strawberry that rises above them all. Nancy Meyers movies, ranked

There are few things in this world I hold as sacred as the romantic comedy genre. I mean, romance and comedy? It’s a match made in heaven.

But sadly, the art of crafting a perfect rom-com is not an easy one to master. Many have tried and failed, but a few, like modern day genius Nancy Meyers, have succeeded beyond my wildest dreams.

If you’re unfamiliar with Meyers, she has a knack for creating hilariously chaotic worlds where characters wear daring all-white outfits all the time, have stupidly gorgeous kitchens, and get their hearts broken to pieces only to have them repaired again in a hot second. Read more…

Eggs, ranked

Happy Easter. Time to talk about eggs.

There are, of course, many ways to appreciate the egg — as breakfast staple, as fancy appetizer, as weird chocolate candy. But some egg presentations are better than others. And some (*cough* — hard-boiled eggs — *cough*) are unforgivable.

Here, our ranking:

17. Scrambled (without cheese)

Scrambled eggs without cheese may as well not be scrambled eggs at all.

16. Humpty Dumpty

Creepy, depressing, and maybe not even an egg. Pass.

15. Hard-boiled

Robs the egg of all its joy. The obligatory “protein’ in your salad. Sure, they are okay, but you’d rather have your eggs cooked another way and you know it. Read more…

Email sign-offs, ranked

TwitterFacebook

Well, you’ve done it. You’ve written the email that will land you the job, get you the big meeting, or convince your landlord to finally replace your non-functional stove.

But now you must choose how to end your flawless email. Do you play it safe and use “Best” as your sign-off? Do you reveal your enthusiasm with an exclamation point? Do you go rogue and make a joke about how you, like Garfield, hate Mondays? It’s a big choice.

There’s definitely not an email sign-off that works for every situation, but there are some sign-offs that are better than others — and, because I get a lot of pitch emails, I’ve pretty much seen them all. Read more…

All 10 Star Wars movies, ranked — including ‘The Last Jedi’

TwitterFacebook

With the release of The Last Jedi on Friday, Lucasfilm marks a major milestone. Believe it or not, this is the 10th Star Wars movie released in theaters.

Yeah, 10 movies, not just the eight Skywalker saga films plus Rogue One. There’s one red-headed cinematic stepchild Lucasfilm would rather forget. Still, 10 is a significant achievement. One worth commemorating with — what else? A top 10 list!

This, then, is the first ever ranking by a viewer of all 10 Star Wars movies. Naturally, you’re free to disagree with the placements. This is the start of a conversation, not the end.  Read more…
