5 tips to help manage your back-to-school mental health

TwitterFacebook

If you’re headed back to school, chances are you’ve already made at least one checklist. Got your schedule? Check. What about your supplies? Check. Talked with friends about which classes you have together? Bet you checked that one more than once.

But there’s something likely missing from your list, and it might be the most important thing you take care of all year: addressing your mental health and wellbeing.

Going back to school can be exciting. It can also be terrifying, particularly for teens who’ve already experienced bullying, anxiety, stress, depression, or trauma. In addition to the nerve-wracking aspects of middle school or high school — crushes, grades, cliques — students today are grappling with intense experiences, including natural disaster anniversaries, school shooting drills, and heightened political and social tensions that disproportionately affect young immigrants and LGBTQ people.  Read more…

To win back teens, Facebook launched a website

TwitterFacebook

Facebook has launched a “youth portal” for “teens” featuring things “teens” like such as dancing emoji, social justice, and “blog posts.”

The company intends for the portal to serve as a youth resource — with a hefty dose of safety tips — so that they can “have a great experience” on Facebook. Experiences that teens are all definitely having, alongside their moms and comment-happy great aunts.

It emphasizes the fact that Facebook can “empower” youth; that it’s a great place to help teens find their voice, and have an impact.

Facebook launches Youth Portal to educate teens on the platform, how their data is being used

America’s youth finally destroyed slacktivism

TwitterFacebook

Hundreds of thousands of young children, teenagers, parents, and concerned people across the U.S. stepped away from their computer screens and left their houses on March 24, gathering in the streets to protest against gun violence in the March for Our Lives.

It would have been much easier just to sign an online petition or tweet with the march’s trending hashtag — in other words, engage in “slacktivism,” or simple activism efforts that require little action and, ultimately, have little impact. But after 17 people were killed in the Feb. 14 school shooting in Parkland, Florida, these Americans couldn’t sit back and value the convenience of slacktivism over the dire need to go out and create real change. Hip teens tempt gravity by sticking objects out the car window

TwitterFacebook

Leave it to bored teens to discover a freaky cool, and slightly anxiety-inducing, thing to do while driving.

Opening and window and speeding down the road, they balance objects against the wind with just a few fingers.

See this bravery in action:

RIP Claire’s, the purest store in any mall

TwitterFacebook

As a child, when my mom finally let me roam the mall alone with friends, the first and only stop that mattered was Claire’s.

The hip AF store was the go-to place for accessories you definitely didn’t need, and jewelry that was very, very cheap and ~extra~. It’s where you got your feather-covered slap bracelets and rainbow knee socks. It was the land of statement chokers and press on nails. If you were especially cool, it’s where you got your ears pierced… FOR FREE.

Claire’s was and still is all that, but according to Bloomberg, the company is prepping to file for bankruptcy — a sign of possible doom for its stores across 47 countries. Read more…
