YouTube’s algorithm is hurting America far more than Russian trolls ever could

TwitterFacebook

Remember when we used to think the greatest threat we faced from Artificial Intelligence was that it would become Skynet and launch our entire nuclear arsenal, wiping out the human race?

Good times.

But on the evidence of YouTube’s latest mess, AI doesn’t even need to bother blowing us up — it can just dumb us down and push endless conspiracy theory videos on us. That way we’ll get so confused about the truth, we won’t take any action to stop killing ourselves.

What YouTube mess do I mean, exactly? Oh, just the fact that the Google-owned video company has pushed videos about the Parkland shooting survivors — specifically, a clip created to support the outrageous lie that one student is a “crisis actor” because he showed up in a news segment in California some months back — to the very top of its influential Trending section.  Read more…

Logan Paul’s fans still love him and some think he’s done nothing wrong

TwitterFacebook

Logan Paul told his fans he wasn’t expecting forgiveness after he published a video of an apparent suicide victim to millions of viewers. “I’m simply here to apologise,” he says. But, despite his egregious and irresponsible actions, forgiveness has been granted by scores of his dedicated teen fans, some of whom believe he did nothing wrong.

The 22-year-old vlogger was heavily criticised after uploading a YouTube video entitled “We found a dead body in the Japanese Suicide Forest” on Jan. 1. In the video— which was subsequently removed from the site—graphic footage is shown of a man who died by suicide in Aokigahara forest, Japan. Paul, who was seen laughing in response to the deceased man, has been criticised for appearing to mock people who’ve died by suicide. It’s worth noting, too, that viewers were not warned about the footage showing a dead body. No resources or helplines were included for viewers who might be experiencing suicidal thoughts.  Read more…

TwitterFacebook

It’s no surprise that having a popular YouTube channel can be lucrative — but just how much has always been a source of curiosity.

The video platform has released a report detailing how much creators earn on the site, with more than 100 Australian channels earning over A$100,000 (US$76,000) in advertising in 2016.

On top of that, 2,000 creators earned between A$1,000 (US$763) and A$100,000 in the same year.

This is revenue earned through advertising that’s displayed alongside their content on the platform, like those pre-roll ads you watch before a video.  Read more…
