Greater Technology, Great Humanity: Social Good Summit 2018

TwitterFacebook

When the Social Good Summit launched in 2010, the way we approached technology and new media was far more optimistic than the world we find ourselves in today.

In 2018, a tweet has the ability to pull us apart. An Instagram post can enrage. And Facebook trolls have the power to divide.

So as we become increasingly reliant on the digital and artificial, “how do we ensure that a world of greater technology is also a world of greater humanity?” asked Henry Timms, Social Good Summit Co-Founder & 92nd Street Y CEO, during this year’s Summit opening. And through a series of dialogues and panels centered on innovation and action at this year’s Social Good Summit, faith in humanity (or at least, its future) was restored. Read more…

The most damning conclusions from the UN’s special climate change report

TwitterFacebook

A grim dose of climate change news has arrived, and top scientists are urging us to deal with it — now.

The United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) — the global agency tasked with providing objective analyses of the societal impacts of climate change — released a powerful report Sunday evening.

It concluded that limiting Earth’s warming to just 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-Industrial Revolution temperatures would require “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society.”

“The next few years are probably the most important in our history,” Debra Roberts, an environmental scientist and one of the report’s lead authors, said in a statementRead more…

Stephen Colbert brilliantly breaks down Trump’s laugh-filled UN appearance

TwitterFacebook

When the president is literally laughed at during an appearance in front of the United Nations General Assembly, you know it’s gonna be fodder for Stephen Colbert.

“Don’t worry, Mr. President, they’re not laughing at you,” Colbert quipped. “They’re laughing with each other at you.”

Colbert delightedly ran through the rest of Trump’s disastrous appearance at the UN on Tuesday, showing clips of the attacks the president made on other countries and proclaiming, “He’s working the room like an insult comic.”

Colbert also couldn’t help pointing out the Kim Jong Un was the only world leader Trump praised — spiking it with the punchline, “Putin is gonna be jealous!” He also compared Trump’s speech to a marriage-hating wedding guest’s toast. Read more…

Trump claims he wanted the UN to laugh at his speech, calls it ‘great’

TwitterFacebook

President Donald Trump is playing off Tuesday morning’s embarrassing moment — in which he was laughed at by the United Nations General Assembly — by saying he totally meant it as a joke

On Tuesday afternoon, between events at the UN, Trump briefly chatted with reporters and he dropped this nugget, apparently confusing the concepts of “laughing at” and “laughing with.”

Trump on laughter at UN during speech: “Oh it was great. Well that was meant to get some laughter, but it was great.”

— Jim Acosta (@Acosta) September 25, 2018

Trump on how his UN speech went:

“I think really well, it’s gotten very good reviews certainly and I think it went very well.”

He said the laugher was intentionally provoked:

“Oh it was great. Well that was meant to get some laughter, but it was great.”

The Social Good Summit invites YOU to join the #2030NOW conversation IRL

TwitterFacebook

The 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly is just around the corner, and New York City will once again play host to international world leaders engaging in high-stakes discussions. Yet for the majority of us who will not be in attendance IRL, the decisions being made are of equally-high (if not higher) stakes. For us everyday global citizens, issues like climate change, poverty, and health present day-to-day challenges.

The Social Good Summit partners — Mashable, the United Nations Foundation, the United Nations Development Programme, and the 92nd Street Y — recognize that we ALL have a stake in the game. This is why we created a platform that grants everyone the opportunity to take part in pressing, forward-thinking conversations. Read more…
