Auctioneering has always been a man’s world. Now women, like Helena Newman, Co-Head for Impressionist and Modern Art Worldwide at Sotheby’s, are putting the hammer down on this particular glass ceiling with elegance and poise. 

Newman is also taking the auction for major evening sales (the fanciest and of highest value auctions) of impressionist and modern art in London and New York. At an auction in March, she broke a record for highest price for a painting ever sold in Europe.  Read more…

For millions of young girls and boys around the world, however, marriage is not a choice. It interrupts their childhood, forcing them into perilous cycles that are all too often impossible to break free from. 

Many young women have risked everything to have the right to choose for themselves. And some managed to escape. Now they’re sharing their empowering stories with women all around the world. The stories were presented in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), which is raising awareness about child marriage around Valentine’s Day – a celebration of love and our right to choose. Hollywood stars will bring activists to the Golden Globes

Going beyond protest pins and black outfits, several Hollywood A-listers are bringing activists to the Golden Globes’ red carpet on Sunday to show support for survivors of sexual harassment and assault.

Actors Laura Dern, Amy Poehler, Susan Sarandon, Meryl Streep, Emma Stone, Emma Watson, Michelle Williams and Shailene Woodley have special guests joining them for the TV and film awards, according to the New York Times.

The activists’ presence at the award show is part of the Time’s Up initiative to support women dealing with sexual harassment and abuse no matter their circumstances — and beyond Hollywood. Read more…

The empowering message behind Pantone’s color of the year

Pantone unveiled its 2018 color of the year Thursday, and the choice strongly hinted at a call for activism and action.

The company chose a deep shade of purple known as Pantone 18-3838, or “ultra violet,” and although it didn’t directly call out the current political climate, the color comes loaded with meaning.

Pantone hailed the color choice for its spirituality and connection to the cosmos, along with its symbolism of counterculture and unconventionality.  But the color goes even further with its ties to women’s suffrage movements and LGBTQ rights. This isn’t just any shade of purple.  Read more…

Last month, actress and director Asia Argento voiced her disgust with criticism from the Italian public after she came forward with rape allegations against Harvey Weinstein. “Italy is far behind the rest of the world in its view of women,” she told the press of her native country.

In 1966, Franca Viola became the first Italian woman to take to court a cultural convention that would have her marry her rapist. With the eyes of a nation upon Viola, her statement to her rapist from the stand became a rallying cry for other women to follow suit. Read more…
