Thanks to historic turnout, Ireland votes to end abortion ban

TwitterFacebook

Ireland, once seen as one of the most socially conservative countries in Western Europe, is poised to end its highly restrictive abortion ban.

The decision came after a historic vote, in which a landslide majority of the country voted to repeal the country’s Eighth amendment, which established an “equal right to life” for mothers and the “unborn,” and banned abortion even in cases of rape and incest, or where the pregnancy was a risk to the mother.

Emotions ran high — and so, too, did celebrations.

Emma Watson sends moving message to people voting in Ireland’s abortion referendum

TwitterFacebook

Emma Watson has tweeted an inspiring message to people voting in Ireland’s historic abortion referendum.

On May 25, Irish people cast their votes to decide whether the country’s 8th amendment—which currently makes abortion illegal in almost all circumstances—should be repealed.

“A vote for the freedom to choose, a vote for women’s rights, a vote for women’s control over their bodies, a vote for women’s health and safety, a vote towards equality,” wrote Watson on Twitter.

A vote for the freedom to choose, a vote for women’s rights, a vote for women’s control over their bodies, a vote for women’s health & safety, a vote towards equality. Thinking of Ireland #together4yes #repealthe8th https://t.co/CDNj9KoSGt
