7 ways to meaningfully honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day

TwitterFacebook

Too often, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is seen as a day off — and little else.

Aside from grade school lessons painting a vague picture of King’s life and activism, the majority of us, especially white people, remain detached from his impact. King is a historical name we’ve learned to recognize, coupled with bits and pieces of facts from a whitewashed history. But truly appreciating his work is hardly on the radar — even on a day made to honor him.

It’s an uncomfortable reality of how we’ve been taught to value (or, rather, not value) one of the most influential black leaders in history. It’s all merely surface; a story we don’t see as extending beyond the crisp pages of an elementary textbook. Read more…

The history behind the ‘bread and roses’ theme to the London Women’s March

TwitterFacebook

“The worker must have bread, but she must have roses, too.” These were the words uttered on April 2, 1911 by a young Polish-born immigrant woman at a meeting at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House.

108 years later, the words “bread and roses” are the rallying cry at Women’s March London — which organisers are dubbing the “Bread and Roses March and Rally”. Protestors will wield flowers as they march from Portland Place to Trafalgar Square on Jan. 19 and they’re being encouraged to donate to local food banks.

Obama’s New Year’s message reminds everyone we’ve got a lot of work to do in 2019

TwitterFacebook

Barack Obama doesn’t have to say much to inspire the masses. A simple message like the one the former president tweeted on New Year’s Day often does the trick.

“In 2018 people stepped up and showed up like never before,” Obama wrote. “Keep it up in 2019. We’ve got a lot of work to do, and I’ll be right there with you. Happy New Year, everybody!”

The replies are exactly what you’d expect, ranging from “Thank you for keeping your voice out there to give us a little bit of hope” to “It soothes my soul to hear from you, our last sane leader” to “You, sir, are a breath of fresh air.”

Starbucks opened its first U.S. store for Deaf and hard-of-hearing customers in Washington, D.C. The cafe’s employees are proficient in American Sign Language and wear aprons with fingerspelling. The store also teaches non-ASL speakers fingerspelling through digital notepads and chalkboard messages. Starbucks’ first-ever “signing” store opened in Malaysia a few years ago, but the D.C. location introduces the concept to American consumers. It also draws attention to how many public spaces are not accessible to people with disabilities while simultaneously demonstrating how they can be reimagined to serve everyone Read more…

Former colleagues accuse Neil deGrasse Tyson of sexual misconduct

TwitterFacebook

Fox and Cosmos are investigating Neil deGrasse Tyson for allegedly engaging in sexually inappropriate behavior, Variety reports. This comes on the heels of a Nov. 29 story in which two women leveled accusations at the astrophysicist.

On Thursday, Patheos published interviews with Tyson’s fellow astronomer Dr. Katelyn N. Allers and his former assistant Ashley Watson. Tyson has also been accused of sexual assault in the past.

“My experience with him is he’s not someone who has great respect for female bodily autonomy,” Allers said.
