Celebrate the birth of the World Wide Web with this Google Doodle

TwitterFacebook

March 12, 1989 was a big day in the annals of digital history.

It was on that day that Tim Berners-Lee proposed the idea of what we’ve come to call the World Wide Web. And so Google has decided to celebrate in classic Google style: with a Doodle

The Doodle, which at the time of this writing is available to our friends living on the other side of the International Date Line (what up, Mashable Australia), depicts an old-school computer slowly downloading an image of a rotating Earth — dial-up modem and all.

Notably, in a blog post announcing the internet’s 30th anniversary, Google makes an effort to head off any possible pedantic ramblings regarding the web versus the internet.  Read more…

It’s official: Apple announces March 25 event

TwitterFacebook

Oh, the excitement.

Apple fans have reason to celebrate today, as the Cupertino-based company officially announced an upcoming event to be held at the Steve Jobs Theater. Invitations hit inboxes March 11, and, as we’ve come to expect, were intentionally vague.

“It’s show time,” the invite reads. “Please join us for an Apple special event at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino.”

The event is scheduled to take place March 25, at 10 a.m. PT.

While it’s not 100 percent clear what the company plans dazzle us with, there is plenty of speculation that it will involve various subscription services — as opposed to something hardware related.  Read more…

Instagram appears to be testing a way to watch videos with friends

TwitterFacebook

Some things are just better with friends.

Like watching videos on the internet, which Facebook has tried to make more social with the introduction of its Watch Party feature, introduced last year.

It appears the company is testing a similar co-watching feature on Instagram, as spotted by Jane Manchun Wong of Hong Kong.

The feature seems like it would be accessible during a video chat on Instagram Direct, and by clicking a button to activate it (as indicated by Wong’s finger).

Huawei announces it will sue the U.S. government

TwitterFacebook

Huawei is taking its fight against the U.S. to the courts.

The Chinese tech giant announced on Thursday it would be filing a lawsuit against the U.S. government, which has accused Huawei of being a spy threat and placed restrictions on its products.

Huawei rotating chairman Guo Ping said the company wants to challenge the constitutionality of the National Defense Authorization Act, which saw Huawei’s products banned in the U.S., and also to seek an injunction against those restrictions.

Guo said the U.S. government has failed to provide evidence on it being a security threat, and has convinced other countries to not use its products. Read more…

Trump called his friend and Apple CEO Tim Cook ‘Tim Apple’

TwitterFacebook

Apparently Trump thinks Apple’s CEO is named … Tim Apple.

The president flubbed Tim Cook’s name during an American Workforce Policy Advisory Board Meeting on Wednesday while complimenting him on expanding employment in the United States.

“You’ve really put a big investment in our country. We appreciate it very much, Tim Apple.”

Please appreciate both Ivanka Trump and Cook’s complete lack of reactions when Trump slips up. Both manage to breeze past it without cracking up, which is a feat in itself.

It didn’t take long for the reaction tweets to roll in.  Read more…

Huawei to U.S. media: Don’t believe everything you hear

TwitterFacebook

Faced with the U.S. government’s accusations of being a spy threat, Huawei has decided to fight back.

On Thursday, the company published a full-page ad in the paper edition of The Wall Street Journal, inviting the U.S. media to “come and see us.”

The ad, signed by Huawei’s Board Director Catherine Chen, starts by praising the U.S. for innovation, but claims the U.S. government has in recent years developed “some misunderstandings” about Huawei.
