‘Be More Chill’ will probably be a Broadway hit. Too bad it’s also a disappointment.

If you aren’t already familiar with Be More Chill, a Broadway musical that opened Sunday, it’s likely a teen in your life can clue you in.
The show, adapted from the YA novel by Ned Vizzini about an anxious high schooler who takes a pill to become po…

Cliff Bleszinksi, the creator of action video game series Gears of War, is helping to bring a musical called Hadestown to Broadway.

Yes, that is a weird collection of words, and it honestly might sound like it’s made up, but it’s real, we promise.

NEWS!

I’m officially co-producing this show.

That’s my next gig!

(Crazy, eh?!)

It’s on Spotify, give it a go. It’s fantastic! https://t.co/Ew7Tr1QsHA

Hadestown, a musical that’s based on the folk opera concept album of the same name by Anaïs Mitchell, is a reimagining of the classic Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, in which Orpheus travels to Hades to see his dead wife EurydiceHadestown is set in depression-era New York City instead of ancient Greece, and also interweaves the story of Persephone and Hades. Theater shows to check out this holiday season

TwitterFacebook

We’re going to go ahead and guess if you’re in NYC for the holidays to see some theater, you’re well aware of big Broadway hits like Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen. So below, we wanted to highlight some recent openings you may not be aware of

Below, in no particular order, we have five new favorites from the fall theatrical season.

1. Torch Song
This revival of sorts is the heartfelt and emotional story of a gay man in the ’70s and early ’80s wrestling with his place in the world and his family. Anchored by a powerful lead performance by Michael Urie (Ugly Betty) this is a play you won’t be able to shake — in the best way. Read more…

Kanye West called out on Twitter for being on his phone during Broadway performance

TwitterFacebook

Being on your phone during a stage production is considered pretty rude, especially if it’s opening night, and even if you’re Kanye West.

The artist was called out on Twitter by one of the stars of Cher-inspired musical The Cher Show, Jarrod Spector, for spending time on his phone during Monday’s opening night performance.

West was attending the show with his wife, Kim Kardashian West, a couple that weren’t ever going to blend in with the crowd — or the cast.

“If you look up from your cell phone you’ll see we’re doing a show up here,” tweeted Spector, who plays Sonny Bono, while the performance was underway. Read more…

Should you believe in ‘The Cher Show’ on Broadway?

TwitterFacebook

She’s a one-name icon, so it feels right that it would take three people to bring her to life eight times a week.

The Cher Show, which just opened on Broadway, gives Cher the musical treatment — which in theory should be a perfect marriage for the campy, vampy icon.

The show is a pretty standard biopic/jukebox musical, tracing the life, loves, and dresses of Cherilyn Sarkisian. And while it doesn’t hit the highs of all-timers like Jersey Boys or Beautiful — stories that have larger themes than just “here are the songs of the artist you love,” fans of the singer should have a good time reminding themselves throughout this highlights reel why she is the ultimate survivor.  Read more…

Why ‘Torch Song’ on Broadway is worth checking out

TwitterFacebook

The show may be set in the late 1970s, but for new play Torch Song — an abridged version of earlier works by Harvey Fierstein, who also originally starred — the show’s themes are as timely now as ever.

Meet Arnold Beckoff (an outstanding Michael Urie). As a young gay man in the 1970s, his caustic wit and one liners are clearly his armor for a rough world, but peel back the layers and viewers quickly see what Arnold wants: acceptance, and, mostly, love.

In the nearly three-hour run time, theatergoers follow Arnold from nights at a backroom bar (leading to some of the funniest physical comedy I’ve seen recently) to weekends away with his ex, to —finally — the real wallop of emotion: a visit from his mother (the perfect and powerful Mercedes Ruehl).  Read more…

Daniel Radcliffe returning to Broadway this fall

TwitterFacebook

Hope 2018 hasn’t tired you out on arguments of what is and isn’t a fact!

Daniel Radcliffe is returning to Broadway this fall in Cursed Child, in an adaptation of the book The Lifespan of a Fact

Radcliffe will star with Bobby Cannavale and Cherry Jones in a tale that, per Variety, “follows the controversy surrounding a John D’Agata’s essay about the suicide of a Las Vegas teen. Originally submitted to Harper’s, which pulled it from publication over fact-checking issues, D’Agata and his fact-checker Jim Fingal re-submitted the piece to The Believer magazine. The pair than co-wrote a 2012 book “The Lifespan of a Fact” about their debate over whether facts can be invented or changed in an essay.” Read more…
