The Broadway version of ‘Frozen’s ‘Let It Go’ is better than the movie version

It may be sacrilegious to say it, but here it goes: The Broadway version of “Let It Go” is better than the movie version.
Just listen to this song from Broadway actor Caissie Levy, who plays Elsa in the Broadway production of Frozen. It’s somehow…

‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ on Broadway sparkles with real theater magic

If you could change the past, would you?

It’s a provocative question, and one you’ll be ruminating on long after viewing Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts One and Two, which officially opened Sunday night on Broadway following an Olivier Award-winning run on London’s West End since 2016.

The script was released in conjunction with the original West End production, so Harry Potter fans the world over could read the new installment if they so chose. It was a new tale springing from the minds of J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, which was turned into a script by Thorne.

The story is fairly complex — probably a bit too dark and complicated for the very youngest Potter fans among us — and wrestles with themes of paying for our father’s sins, living in the shadow of our parents, and the fact that history is cyclical and tends to repeat itself. Oh yeah, and time travel. Lots and lots of time travel.  Read more…

‘Mean Girls’ on Broadway is fun and fetch

TwitterFacebook

The Plastics are ready to rule again.

As anyone with a passing knowledge of pop culture is aware, the Plastics refer to the enviable, popular ladies that make up the 2004 modern classic film about teenagers, Mean Girls. And it seems the ladies are poised to shine once more, as a musical version of the beloved film hits Broadway.

Perhaps not surprisingly, given the rabid fanbase that has spent the past 14 years quoting the film to each other, the Mean Girls musical, with a book by Tina Fey and music by Jeff Richmond, hews quite closely to its source material. Many iconic lines from the film are delivered exactly how you remember them (“Danny DeVito! I love your work!”), and are immediately greeted by enthusiastic audience cheers. Clearly, for many fans, a faithful retelling of the endlessly rewatchable film — with a couple additional dance breaks — is what they are after. Read more…

Here’s the new ‘Frozen’ song that’s gonna get stuck in your head for the next million years

Move over, “Let It Go.” There’s a new Frozen earworm in town.

This one, titled “Monster,” is the first original song released from the Frozen Broadway musical. You can hear it sung here by Caissie Levy, who’ll play Elsa on stage.

Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, who wrote the songs for the Frozen movie, are back working their magic for the show. The Broadway production features 12 new songs, along with all your faves from the film – including, yes, “Let It Go.”

“Monster” comes in the second act, as Elsa starts to wonder if she might be a monster. Other new tunes include another Elsa solo called “Dangerous to Dream,” an Anna solo called “True Love,” and and Anna-Kristoff duet titled “What Do You Know About Love.”  Read more…

Lin-Manuel Miranda to reprise ‘Hamilton’ role…in Puerto Rico

TwitterFacebook

Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda will reprise his iconic role. In 2019, Miranda will return to the award-winning musical in the title role when it opens in San Juan, Puerto Rico, according to Playbill

Miranda is loud and proud of his Puerto Rican heritage, and of the diverse, color-blind Hamilton cast as it reflects his American upbringing. His last performance as Alexander Hamilton was in July 2016.

“Bringing [Hamilton] to Puerto Rico is a dream that I’ve had since we first opened at The Public Theater in 2015,” Miranda said in a statement through Playbill. “When I last visited the island, a few weeks before Hurricane Maria, I had made a commitment to not only bring the show to Puerto Rico, but also return again to the title role. In the aftermath of Maria we decided to expedite the announcement of the project to send a bold message that Puerto Rico will recover and be back in business, stronger than ever.” Read more…
