‘Revenant’ director on Mexican filmmakers: “We’ll build a wall made entirely out of Oscars”

According to President Trump, you can supposedly reduce all Mexican immigrants to either “drug dealers,” “criminals,” or “rapists.” Yet it seems he conveniently left out one of the actual occupations Mexicans are dominating in America: Best Picture Academy Award-winning directors.

After Guillermo del Toro’s big win for The Shape of Water on Sunday, his friend and fellow Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu had the best response to Donald Trump’s ongoing obsession with building his “beautiful wall” (that neither Mexico nor the United States appear willing to pay for).

“!Vamos a hacer un muro de puros Oscars!” he reportedly exclaimed to an El Pais reporter. Or, as People translated, “We’re going to build a wall made entirely out of Oscars!” Read more…

‘Coco’ songwriter Robert Lopez just became the first person ever to complete a double EGOT

TwitterFacebook

You know what’s sweeter than winning an EGOT? Winning two EGOTs.

Or so we assume. Only one person would actually know what it feels like to pull off a double EGOT – that is, two wins each from the Emmys, Grammys, Oscars, and Tonys – and that’s Frozen songwriter Robert Lopez.

Lopez completed the feat at Sunday’s Academy Awards, where he picked up a Best Original Song win (with Kristen Anderson-Lopez, his frequent collaborator and wife) for “Remember Me” from Coco

He collected his first EGOT in 2014, when he scored his first Best Original Song win for “Let It Go” from Frozen. At the time, he was only the 12th person ever to win an EGOT, and the fastest EGOT winner in history – it took him just 10 years to get from the first prize to the fourth. Read more…

TwitterFacebook

What should a person be willing to sacrifice to achieve their dreams?

The easy answer is “everything,” and film after film, aimed at both children and adults, has been based on that premise.

Pixar’s Coco, though, takes on the bigger challenge of reckoning with the cost, and wondering where the limit lies.

The film opens with a prologue detailing a great tragedy buried in a family’s past: Once upon a time, a musician abandoned his family to chase fame and fortune. His wife turned to shoemaking to support herself and her daughter – and banned music from the house forever, in bitter remembrance of her husband. Read more…
