The future is female, diverse, and lucrative as hell.

A new study conducted by USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative has revealed what many 2018 moviegoers already knew: Women and people of color crushed it at the box office.

Looking at the 100 highest-grossing films from each of the past 12 years, USC’s research team broke down 2018’s diversity gains by comparing last year’s casting stats with previously established casting trends.

‘Aquaman’ is the first DC Extended Universe movie to make $1 billion

TwitterFacebook

Aquaman is officially a billion dollar movie now.

Just over a month after its initial release, in China on Dec. 7, the latest entry in the DC Extended Universe has become the 37th movie in history to make more than $1 billion at the global box office. It’s also the only DC Extended Universe release to reach that milestone.

That’s especially impressive when you realize that Aquaman, with just $287.9 million earned so far in the U.S. (where it opened on Dec. 21), is so far the worst-performing DCEU movie domestically after Justice League. Most of Aquaman‘s success — $732.4 million, to be exact — came from audiences outside the United States. Read more…

Disney’s box office topped $7 billion in 2018 and half of it was Marvel movies

In 2009, Disney paid $4 billion to acquire Marvel. Less than 10 years later, in 2018, Marvel movies accounted for more than half of Disney’s $7.3 billion box office haul.
I’d say that was a good investment, wouldn’t you?

‘Aquaman’ overtakes ‘Wonder Woman’ in global box office total

TwitterFacebook

Aquaman just slid past Wonder Woman‘s international box office, earning over $822 million (Wonder Woman earned $821.8 million globally).

This makes Aquaman the second-highest DC Extended Universe global box office, behind 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Wonder Woman is still winning the domestic box office (it reached $330 million while Aquaman is around $189 million), but Aquaman‘s international sales have boosted its performance immensely, particularly in China.

Both Aquaman and Wonder Woman made their debuts in Dawn of Justice, along with Ezra Miller as the Flash. The film reached the $873.6 million mark globally – a goal Aquaman is on track to achieve, having been in theaters only two weeks thus far.  Read more…

‘Aquaman’ is already kicking the crap out of ‘Justice League’ at the global box office

TwitterFacebook

Aquaman commands more than just the denizens of Earth’s oceans. He’s also got a vise-like hold on the box office, at least outside the United States.

The latest entry in the DC Extended Universe opened in U.S. theaters on Friday with an impressive $332.1 million already banked. That’s after almost three weeks in theaters in a number of overseas markets — including the historically Hollywood-friendly China.

That’s where Aquaman has made the biggest splash so far. As of Dec. 16, the movie’s Chinese box office total had reached $189 million, according to Box Office Mojo. For comparison: that’s already more than Justice League, the 2017 tentpole DCEU release from Warner Bros., managed to pick up in China during its entire theatrical run there ($106.1 million).
