Watch as 8 people crash their parachutes into a Florida swamp

TwitterFacebook

If there’s one lesson parachuters should keep in mind, it’s always look before you leap.

This very Florida video, which captures the terrifying events of a New Year’s Eve parachute party gone wrong, shows what happens if you don’t.

The first half of the video follows Lane Paquin as he crashes his parachute — appropriately named the Valkyrie 79 — into a thick Florida swamp. After confirming to himself that he’s OK, the video switches perspectives and shows each of his friends following suite — crashing into everything from trees, to swampy water, and even a dirt road.

Miraculously, all eight people walked away with only minor injuries, but the journey was definitely one wild ride.  Read more…

Musk says latest Tesla crash isn’t ‘front page news,’ but it is because of Autopilot

TwitterFacebook

A woman rear-ended a fire truck in Utah last week and broke her ankle in the crash. That in and of itself doesn’t seem like the typical story that would trigger national coverage, but because a Tesla electric car with semi-autonomous features was involved, everyone’s talking about it

This week, Tesla CEO Elon Musk doubled (tripled? quadrupled?) down on the safety of Tesla’s Autopilot feature — a semi-automated driver assistance mode Tesla introduced to its cars in 2014 and now comes with every vehicle. The stat Musk and the company repeated (and will continue to repeat) about Autopilot reducing crash rates by 40 percent came under some scrutiny earlier this monthWired found that the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration-backed stat is likely based on flawed, unreliable data. Car crash becomes national news because a Waymo minivan was involved

TwitterFacebook

Two moving cars collided in Arizona on Friday. If one of them hadn’t been fitted with Waymo self-driving tech, no one would have noticed.

The crash occurred in Chandler, Ariz. when a Honda sedan swerved into oncoming traffic to avoid another accident. It then struck the Waymo van, which the company claims was operating in manual mode — which means the human behind the wheel was in charge — at the time.

A video captured from the van’s own camera and released by Waymo shows the 5-second period leading up to the crash.

The sequence of events seen in this short clip are pretty clear. The Honda swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle in the intersection and seemed to momentarily lose control as it crossed the median. Waymo’s van, traveling in the center lane on the opposite side of the street, appears to have been a victim of circumstance. Read more…

Intense video shows truck with raised trailer smashing into overpass

TwitterFacebook

A semi loaded with canola seeds slammed into an overpass on Highway 40 outside of Montreal on Wednesday.

Another motorist managed to capture the accident on camera, and holy crap you need to watch the footage because it’s intense. When the raised trailer crashes into the pedestrian bridge, the contents of the trailer fly across the highway.

The CBC reports that nobody was injured in the collision, and the walkway was dismantled on Thursday as a “preventative measure” by the Transportation Ministry.   Read more…

Olympic Austrian skier dramatically crashes into cameraman

TwitterFacebook

The Olympics are all fun and games, until someone suffers an intense crash.

In this case, Austrian alpine ski races Matthias Mayer fell during the men’s alpine combined, running over a cameraman in the process.

Some people enjoy watching the crashes, because they are reminded of the fact that no one, not even an Olympic athlete, is perfect.

But in this case, I just hope he’s OK.
