Electric-vehicle manufacturer Eli Electric has created a futuristic but odd-looking electric car. You can pre-order it today on … Indiegogo?
Yes, that’s right: A crowd-funded car. That’s not something you see every day.
The Eli Zero, a two-seater electric vehicle that looks suspiciously like a go-kart with doors, has, in its first few days of crowdfunding, already surpassed its $20,000 goal.
We’ll be the first to admit that this thing looks absurdly fun to drive. Its compact size makes it ideal for zipping around the city, or for quick jaunts to the grocery store or gym. But it has a top speed of 25 miles per hour and a starting range of 55 miles, so forget driving it on the highway — or anywhere of consequence, really. Read more…

Elon Musk lets customers know when that dual-motor Tesla Model 3 will arrive
Those Tesla Model 3 orders are taking awhile, but at least the electric carmaker’s CEO Elon Musk is keeping customers in the loop.
Over the weekend, Musk, who is apparently sleeping at the factory as he takes over production of the behind-schedule electric sedan, responded to a tweet about a dual-motor version. Musk said to expect the special dual-motor Model 3 configuration in July — the car company needs to focus on the basics first. The dual-motor design was leaked earlier this year.
We need to achieve 5k/week with Model 3 before adding complexity that would inhibit production ramp

BMW debuted an electric version of the classic Mini right before the New York Auto Show
The future and the past are converging at the 2018 New York Auto Show.
BMW has unveiled its third concept electric Mini vehicle, this one dubbed “the classic Mini Electric.” The car is exactly what it sounds like: The company took an old version of the Mini and outfitted it with an all-electric drivetrain.
The announcement is a natural extension of BMW’s ongoing efforts to electrify many of its new concept and production cars. BMW’s earlier electric vehicles — such as the Mini E — have been based heavily on the Mini’s tiny size and excellent performance.
BMW appears to have removed the Mini badge you know and love from the hood of the car, and replaced it with the same Mini Electric logo that adorns the company’s EV Concept Car. The vehicle itself looks like a cross between an electric plug and an eagle’s head. There’s also an interesting charging port included on the passenger’s side. Read more…

Your iPhone is driving Apple to desperate measures in a race that’s bad for the planet
The work is not easy at the Kamoto Underground Mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where laborers — some of them children — spend long hours each day retrieving copper and separate it from the more lucrative and rare metal known as cobalt.
This mine is one of many such facilities in the DRC, an unstable country with a poor human rights record that dominates the world market for rare metals. Some of the cobalt mined in the DRC is refined domestically, and some is shipped to Asia, where it is refined into a form that’s useful for cutting-edge electronics.
And that refined cobalt is probably in your phone right now, and, if you own an electric car, it’s also in your vehicle’s battery. Read more…
