Fisker claims it will build an electric car that charges in 1 minute

TwitterFacebook

Fisker, the luxury electric auto startup founded by renowned designer and former Tesla consultant Henrik Fisker, claims it’s developed a breakthrough that could knock Tesla off its perch as the world’s premier electric carmaker — and many completely change the way we use batteries in the process.

The upstart company filed patents for a new solid-state battery design that would give its cars some truly astonishing performance capabilities. Fisker says the new batteries will give its vehicles a range of more than 500 miles per charge, with the capability to power up in less than one minute.

Those two stats would smash Tesla’s current top options, not to mention every other car and battery out there. Tesla’s most long-range vehicle, the Model S 100D, offers an estimated 335 miles per charge using a lithium-ion battery. Tesla cars usually take about half an hour to fully charge at one of the company’s Supercharger stationsRead more…

The beloved VW Beetle is about to go electric

TwitterFacebook

The timeless VW Beetle is about to step into the future.

Volkswagen is considering plans for an electric Beetle, according to VW’s chairman Herbert Diess.

Speaking to Autocar, Diess said that the company was “actively considering” plans for an electric Beetle as part of a range of zero-emissions cars.

He also added that if an electric successor would be made, it would actually be a throwback to the original rear-wheel drive Beetle.

“If we wanted to do a Beetle, electrically it would be much better than today’s model, much closer to history, because it could be rear-wheel drive,” said Diess. Read more…

The wheels on Daimler’s new bus go round and round, thanks to electricity

TwitterFacebook

Fleets of school buses shuttle American students to class five days a week, nine months a year, pumping out diesel fumes as they roll along — but now, thanks to one of the biggest automakers in the world, more of those big yellow rigs are going green.

German auto conglomerate Daimler unveiled its first all-electric school bus, which will be made by its North American Thomas Built Buses subsidiary. The Saf-T-Liner C2, also dubbed “Jouley” after the unit of energy, is slated to hit the roads across U.S. school districts in 2019. Read more…

Ford launches a new company to make electric cars in China

TwitterFacebook

Ford is pushing to electrify its vehicles going forward, and the company just made another big move to enter the largest market in the burgeoning EV landscape: China.

The automaker signed a definitive joint venture agreement with China’s Zotye to invest a combined $756 million to build electric cars within the country’s borders. The deal creates a new entity, Zotye Ford Automobile Co. Ltd., for which the companies will hold equal stakes. The two companies previously signed a memorandum of understanding back in August, so the more formal partnership shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Zotye is no stranger to the Chinese EV market — the brand says it has sold 22,500 of its small, all-electric cars as of October. The carmaker’s experience and presence in China will no doubt be valuable to Ford, which faces competition from fellow U.S. auto giants like GM, which has already unveiled a small EV for Chinese urbanites through its Baojun brand, the E100Read more…

Vespa’s first electric scooter will hit the streets in 2018

TwitterFacebook

Vespa is going green.

The Piaggio Group, the parent company behind the iconic motor scooter brand, just announced at the Milan Motorcycle Show that Vespa will produce its first all-electric model in 2018. The Electtrica first debuted as a concept vehicle at last year’s show, but now, as more automakers embrace electrification and release all-electric and hybrid vehicles, the company will actually put the scooter on roads IRL.

The EV doesn’t look much different from Vespa’s other offerings — it’s got the same design profile as the gas-powered Primavera, with a space-age chrome-and-blue color scheme in promo images (seven other color variations will also be produced).  Read more…

Navya’s fully self-driving taxi looks straight out of Robocop

TwitterFacebook

Navya, the French company behind the all-electric, self-driving ARMA shuttle buses on the streets in Las Vegas, Michigan, and Singapore, has a brand-new ride for cities looking to create fleets of driverless taxicabs.

The company just unveiled its latest electric autonomous vehicle, the Autonum Cab, at a private company event in Paris. Navya’s calling the car the “world’s first taxi robot,” a title that competitors with public pilot programs on the road like Waymo, Uber, and Cruise would probably be quick to dispute — but the new cab certainly looks more like something straight out of a sci-fi movie than any of the other self-driving cars currently on the road.  Read more…
