As we hunt for free ice cream on this glorious holiday, National Ice Cream Day, let us not forget that not all ice cream stories end well. Especially when Chopped‘s involved.

The long-running Food Network show pits four contestants against each other as they compete for a cash prize. They go through three cooking speed rounds, whipping up an appetizer, entree, and dessert using random ingredients provided in a basket — you can get everything from sardines paired with watermelon to mud pie and potato chips. 

The dessert round decides the game, and even though there have been more than three dozen seasons of this reality show, contestants still make the mistake of using the ice cream machine. Read more…

Ham ice cream is the newest thing that no one asked for

For the two people that believe that there’s no wrong way to mash foods together, we’ve got great news for you. 

Taylor ham ice cream now exists.

For those who don’t know, Taylor ham is basically really good ham. And New Jersey loves it so much they make it with all types of food, except dessert. Until now.

Windy Brow Farms in Sussex County, New Jersey, has just introduced the state’s first Taylor ham ice cream, with a “French toast/maple element” to make it sweeter.

Hot cross bun cones are the Frankenfectionery we’re here for this Easter

While Easter is a religious occasion, for most of us it’s about an avalanche of sugary treats. But while chocolate rabbits and Easter eggs are the traditional go-tos, one innovative team has created a new kind of Frankenfection.

Fusing Easter’s traditional hot cross bun with an ice cream cone, Giapo’s R&D Kitchen in Auckland has created the “Hot Cross Bun Cone.”

Spiced sweet buns topped with a cross to reference the crucifixion of Jesus, hot cross buns are a traditional Easter food to mark the end of Lent — they’re mostly eaten on Good Friday, but some folks eat them all Easter long. While they’re not super prevalent in the U.S., you’ll find many folks eating them in New Zealand, Australia, the UK, Canada and South Africa. Read more…
