Critics agree ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’ spells trouble for the franchise

“The real driving force behind Crimes of Grindelwald seems to be a burning desire to set up a sequel. If only it had gone to the trouble of making me want to see one.”

What loving Severus Snape taught me about myself

TwitterFacebook

It’s Villain Week here at Mashable. In honor of the release of Venom, we’re celebrating all our favorite evildoers from film and TV all week long. Spooky, scary!

I remember the precise moment I finally understood my dark fascination with Professor Snape — that greasy-haired, hook-nosed, black billowing robe of terror who stalked the halls of Hogwarts.

The Occlumency lessons with Harry backfired for the first time in Order of the Phoenix, and suddenly we were in Snape’s memories. And for the first time, I glimpsed the boy that would grow into the terrifying Potions Master:

It was just a passing image, but my throat clenched, breath caught. Because here was this scene I’d seen play out so many times in my own life. And an experience I never imagined I shared in common with the foreboding, formidable man I thought I knew after four lengthy books. Read more…

TwitterFacebook

The award-winning two-part Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is heading to California in 2019. The show, which just earned six Tony Awards, will premiere at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco.

“The Bay Area is where cutting-edge culture meets cutting-edge technology, so this wonderful example of riveting storytelling and first-of-its-kind stage magic has found its ideal home in our great city,” said the Ambassador Theatre Group’s Carole Shorenstein Hays in a press release.

“My family and I are filled with joy thinking about all the audiences coming to San Francisco to experience Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – particularly first-time and young theatergoers, who have always been a core part of our mission.” Read more…

J.K. Rowling has apologised again for killing someone you loved in ‘Harry Potter’

TwitterFacebook

You have a lot to answer for, J.K.

May 2nd is the anniversary of the infamous Battle of Hogwarts, the teenagers vs. villains climax of the Harry Potter books.

Often on this auspicious day, writer and destroyer of your innocence J.K. Rowling tweets an apology for killing off your beloved characters.

In 2016 it was Lupin.

Once again, it’s the anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts so, as promised, I shall apologise for a death. This year: Remus Lupin.

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) May 2, 2016

2017 was Snape, Snape, Severus Snape.

OK, here it is. Please don’t start flame wars over it, but this year I’d like to apologise for killing (whispers)… Snape. *runs for cover*

‘Fantastic Beasts’ sequel won’t mention Dumbledore’s sexuality

TwitterFacebook

“I always thought of Dumbledore as gay,” J.K. Rowling announced nonchalantly to her fans shortly after the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

11 years later, the highly anticipated Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will introduce us to a young Dumbledore, but will “not explicitly” tell us he’s gay, director David Yates told Entertainment Weekly.

When Rowling made her announcement in 2007, Albus Dumbledore – already a hero to millions of Harry Potter fans, became instantly canonized in literature as a prolific gay character; one who was not stereotypical or negative, and whose tragic love story with the evil Grindelwald as teens has fascinated Potter fans ever since they learned of it.  Read more…

J.K. Rowling’s Johnny Depp response raises more questions than it answers

TwitterFacebook

J.K. Rowling, who has been criticized for her silence regarding Johnny Depp’s continued involvement with the Fantastic Beasts film franchise, posted a statement to her personal website on Thursday that offers little explanation – just in more words than a tweet.

Rowling said her instinct was to be excited about Depp’s casting, that she and many others involved in the films had reservations when he was first cast, and that she ultimately feels it was the right decision for the franchise.

Despite her silence on Twitter and refusal to engage with critical fans about the casting, Rowling suggests that she’s been privy to the backlash that surfaced when Depp was first cast as the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald and while he’s become a regular in the series. Read more…
