Johnny Depp gives first ‘Fantastic Beasts’ interview, addresses casting controversy

TwitterFacebook

Johnny Depp hasn’t spoken about being cast as Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise since news broke in 2016, but the actor gave Entertainment Weekly a rare phone interview as Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald approaches.

Depp’s casting remains a subject of caution and contention among swaths of Harry Potter fans because he was accused of assaulting ex-wife Amber Heard several months before Beasts premiered (some fans plan to boycott the film and franchise entirely).

“Ultimately, there is real controversy,” the actor told EW. “The fact remains I was falsely accused, which is why I’m suing the Sun newspaper for defamation for repeating false accusations. J.K. [Rowling] has seen the evidence and therefore knows I was falsely accused, and that’s why she has publicly supported me. She doesn’t take things lightly. She would not stand up if she didn’t know the truth.” Read more…

‘Fantastic Beasts’ sequel won’t mention Dumbledore’s sexuality

TwitterFacebook

“I always thought of Dumbledore as gay,” J.K. Rowling announced nonchalantly to her fans shortly after the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

11 years later, the highly anticipated Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will introduce us to a young Dumbledore, but will “not explicitly” tell us he’s gay, director David Yates told Entertainment Weekly.

When Rowling made her announcement in 2007, Albus Dumbledore – already a hero to millions of Harry Potter fans, became instantly canonized in literature as a prolific gay character; one who was not stereotypical or negative, and whose tragic love story with the evil Grindelwald as teens has fascinated Potter fans ever since they learned of it.  Read more…

Razzie Awards nominate Mark Wahlberg, ‘Fifty Shades,’ and ‘mother!’ for being the worst

TwitterFacebook

Movies were great in 2017, but in a very real sense they were also terrible. We will only reach movie nirvana when the Razzies no longer award the worst movies, pairings, and actors in a given year. 2017’s biggest culprits were Fifty Shades Darker and Transformers: The Last Knight – the latter of which earned Mark Wahlberg one of two Worst Actor nominations along with Daddy’s Home 2

Apart from the biggest offenders, the Razzies showed little mercy for reboots like Baywatch and The Mummy, and for the ongoing shenanigans of Tyler Perry and Johnny Depp in roles they’ve played for over a decade. The formerly Oscar-buzzy mother! earned Worst Actress and Worst Director nominations for Jennifer Lawrence and Darren Aronofsky, respectively. Read more…

Daniel Radcliffe weighs in on Johnny Depp remaining in ‘Fantastic Beasts’

TwitterFacebook

Harry Potter fans around the world will have to come to terms with Johnny Depp as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts, and Daniel Radcliffe himself is among them.

“It’s a very hard thing for me,” Radcliffe told Entertainment Weekly. He expressed gratitude to the Potter producers who “gave me a great start in life and an amazing job.”

Depp was cast as early as 2016 and had a cameo in the franchise debut Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The casting caused immediate controversy; Depp was accused of domestic abuse by Amber Heard mere months earlier, and the Harry Potter fandom had already seen its share of abusers outed and ousted.
