J.K. Rowling’s Johnny Depp response raises more questions than it answers

TwitterFacebook

J.K. Rowling, who has been criticized for her silence regarding Johnny Depp’s continued involvement with the Fantastic Beasts film franchise, posted a statement to her personal website on Thursday that offers little explanation – just in more words than a tweet.

Rowling said her instinct was to be excited about Depp’s casting, that she and many others involved in the films had reservations when he was first cast, and that she ultimately feels it was the right decision for the franchise.

Despite her silence on Twitter and refusal to engage with critical fans about the casting, Rowling suggests that she’s been privy to the backlash that surfaced when Depp was first cast as the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald and while he’s become a regular in the series. Read more…

‘Harry Potter’ fan says J.K. Rowling blocked her after she criticised Johnny Depp

TwitterFacebook

A Harry Potter fan has gone viral on Twitter after she was apparently blocked by J.K. Rowling for tweeting a question about Johnny Depp.

The whole thing started on Tuesday, when 24-year-old lab technician Lindsey B tagged Rowling in the following tweet:

So if I understand correctly the actor who played Crabbe, a minor character, was fired from Harry Potter for doing drugs. Yet Johnny Depp, who abused his wife, gets a major role in your movies? Correct me if I’m wrong @jk_rowling

‘Fantastic Beasts’ director turns blind eye to Johnny Depp backlash

TwitterFacebook

“Honestly there’s an issue at the moment where there’s a lot of people being accused of things, they’re being accused by multiple victims, and it’s compelling and frightening,” Yates told EW. “With Johnny, it seems to me there was one person who took a pop at him and claimed something.” Read more…

‘Fantastic Beasts’ isn’t going to recast Johnny Depp, and that’s a huge mistake

TwitterFacebook

There was a time when Harry Potter fans would have been delighted to see Johnny Depp in their beloved films – heck, there was a time when we didn’t know Depp had abused his ex-wife, and neither of those times is now.

On Thursday, Warner Bros. released the first cast photo for the upcoming Fantastic Beasts sequel, with the shockingly tone-deaf title The Crimes of Grindelwald. Depp and his hideous frosted hair are here to stay; he now plays the titular character, and the film’s title reveal is nothing if not a giant middle finger to Harry Potter fans and audiences around the world.
