March for Our Lives, Tide Pods, and the overdue evolution of how we talk about teens

TwitterFacebook

If there’s one demographic that pop culture is obsessed with, it’s the seemingly monolithic entity that we’ve come to know as Teen™.

Whether it’s Gossip Girl (rich teens in the city), Pretty Little Liars (devious teens in a murder mystery), Glee (teens who sing), Saved By The Bell (wholesome teens going to school), we as a culture just can’t stop asking: What are these kids up to?! Follow along closely, and you’re likely to get whiplash from the severe ways each caricature careens back and forth.

But there’s no period that has contradicted itself more when it comes to the portrayal of teens than 2018. From viral internet stunts to student protests, this year has shown us that the way we talk about teens has finally started its long-overdue evolution. Read more…

The largest protests in American history are happening now. Expect them to get bigger.

TwitterFacebook

Size matters — at least when it comes to the size of our protests.

Though final count is still being tabulated, researchers Erica Chenoweth and Jeremy Pressman of the Crowd Counting Consortium estimate that over 1.25 million people across the United States participated in Saturday’s March for Our Lives protest, making it one of the largest youth-led protests in American history, at least since the Vietnam War.

Beyond youth-led protests, March for Our Lives is also poised to become one of the biggest protests, period, in American history, surpassed only by the Women’s March in 2017, where an estimated 4.15 million people participated, and the Women’s March in 2018, where anywhere from 1.6 to 2.5 million people participated domestically.  Read more…

No, Emma González did not rip up the U.S. Constitution

TwitterFacebook

Emma González’s arresting speech at the March for Our Lives is one we won’t forget for years to come.

But, as González and millions of people marched to demand legislation to prevent gun violence, fake images of the activist ripping the U.S. Constitution were being circulated by self-professed NRA supporters.

The image was debunked by Don Moynihan—professor of government at University of Wisconsin—who tweeted the doctored image alongside the original image, which showed González tearing up a gun-range target. The original image is a screenshot of a video produced by Teen Vogue to accompany an op-ed penned by the 18-year-old, entitled “Why This Generation Needs Gun Control.  Read more…

Rick Santorum seems to think teen protesters are just dumping their problems on others

TwitterFacebook

Rick Santorum is no longer an elected official, but that doesn’t mean he’s stopped being a heartless buffoon.

The former Senator from Pennsylvania appeared on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday, and for some unfathomable reason he decided to use that platform to criticize the students across the country who spent Saturday marching in support of gun control. That’s right, he legit went after survivors of gun violence — and the internet was not pleased.

“How about kids, instead of looking to someone else to solve their problem, do something about maybe taking CPR classes or trying to deal with situations that when there is a violent shooter that you can actually respond to that,” noted the aspiring sweater vest spokesperson.  Read more…

Wisconsin high school students to walk 50 miles, dare Paul Ryan not to act on gun reform

TwitterFacebook

March For Our Lives and its hundreds of sibling marches may have ended Saturday, but a group of Wisconsin students decided to keep walking in support of the movement’s cause — all the way to Speaker of the House Paul Ryan’s office in Janesville, Wisconsin.

The students, many of whom attended local Wisconsin marches Saturday, set out Sunday morning from Madison, the state’s capital. Drawing inspiration from the 54-mile civil rights march from Selma  to Montgomery, in 1965, the students have dubbed their protest walk “50 Miles More.” They hope their 50-mile trek to the Republican congressional leader’s office will help keep the spotlight on gun reform.    Read more…

Why does the gun control issue feel different after Parkland? Just look at Taylor Swift.

TwitterFacebook

As far as political statements go, Taylor Swift’s March for Our Lives words weren’t anything terribly dramatic.

The singer started her Instagram post with the common-sense statement that “No one should have to go to school in fear of gun violence,” and ended with an announcement that she’s made a donation in support of the movement. It’s nothing we haven’t seen from dozens, if not hundreds, of other celebrities already

But it is something rare coming from this particular celebrity.

Here’s what the March For Our Lives in D.C. looked like from space

TwitterFacebook

Hundreds of thousands of people showed up in Washington, D.C. to attend Saturday’s March For Our Lives. As you might expect, that kind of turnout makes for some pretty impressive photos — even from space.

New images from DigitalGlobe’s Worldview-2 satellite show the sea of people — and their signs — gathered to march and rally for common-sense gun reform. They’re an astounding reminder of the sheer size of this movement. Isn’t that right, NRA?

See for yourself.

March For Our Lives crowd estimates trump Trump’s inauguration

TwitterFacebook

Facts don’t lie. That’s as true now as it was at Donald Trump’s January 2017 inauguration.

The estimated turnout at the March For Our Lives demonstration in Washington, D.C. falls at around 800,000. That data point comes from official connected to the demonstration’s organizers, speaking to NBC.

It’s also a significantly higher number than earlier forecasts had predicted.

Officials connected with today’s #MarchForOurLives here in D.C. tell @NBCNews that they are estimating a crowd size of *800,000* after forecasts of 500,000

Sure feels likes that from our vantage point on the ground.
