Doctor Who star Matt Smith is returning to the cosmos! Variety reports that the actor, most recently known for his role as Prince Philip in The Crown, has been cast in an undisclosed but “key” role in Star Wars Episode IX.

Knowing how well Star Wars loves to cast tall, posh-sounding British men as officers of the First Order, it’s entirely possible that he’ll join Domnhall Gleeson’s General Hux on the dark side of the galactic struggle — but there’s something to be said for playing against type. 2 actors who played Doctor Who hugged IRL and fans were like woah

It’s the stuff that Whovians dream of. But, over the weekend, it became a reality. 

Two actors who played Doctor Who met IRL and their greeting couldn’t have been more lovely. 

Christopher Eccleston — who played the Ninth Doctor — and Matt Smith — who played the Eleventh Doctor — spotted each other at London Film and Comic Con and gave each other a massive hug.

Twitter user @Twelveslapels tweeted photos of the pair locked in a handshake.

Petition calls for Matt Smith to donate his pay disparity from ‘The Crown’

Following the recent reveal that Matt Smith out-earned Claire Foy on The Crown – even though Foy was the true lead of the series – fans are calling on Smith to help even the score. 

A Care2 petition is asking Smith and Netflix to donate the difference in Smith and Foy’s paychecks to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund, as a way to “make up for this sexist pay gap.” At time of writing, the campaign has over 24,000 signatures.

Smith and Netflix did not respond to Mashable’s requests for comment. 

News of the pay disparity emerged last week, when producers admitted during a panel that Smith was paid more in large part due to his Doctor Who fame.  Read more…
