Why women need Galentine’s Day more than ever this year

TwitterFacebook

In 2010, Galentine’s Day was just another Parks and Rec episode, but in recent years it’s become a symbol of female empowerment and solidarity.

The fictional holiday, brought to life by Leslie Knope (played by Amy Poehler), was a day filled with “ladies celebrating ladies.” Since the episode aired, Feb, 13 has become a real-life celebration of women’s triumphs rather than oppression — and it’s more important than ever this year.

The popularity of the day gives us an excuse to get our friends together, eat waffles, and drink cocktails. Naturally, businesses like Target, Amazon, and Walmart have tried to get in on the action and produce themed-products across the country. While food and drinks can be a great bonus to the party, the “holiday” is more than just a day brands can profit from. It is a time for women to come together to reflect on goals, dreams, and accomplishments.  Read more…

Crisis Text Line may hold the key to helping us get better at difficult conversations

TwitterFacebook

Since its founding five years ago, Crisis Text Line has received more than 62 million messages from people experiencing intense psychological or emotional distress. They reach out for help and empathy, and the counselors who respond are trained to help defuse the situation.

It turns out those text conversations have a purpose beyond saving lives; with the help of artificial intelligence, all of that data can be analyzed to reveal important clues about what makes a difficult exchange between two people go well — or not well at all. That’s the basis for Loris, a new for-profit company that’s being spun off from Crisis Text Line.  Read more…

One woman’s quest to find the right meditation app in a messed-up world

TwitterFacebook

My iPhone, normally the quotidian keeper of grocery lists and Fitbit stats, has lately begun to feel like a sprawling self-help library. The transformation began a few weeks ago, when I decided to test several meditation and mindfulness apps in order to share with you, dear reader, tips and insights from my experiment

At first I felt giddy. I’d downloaded seven different apps that promised, in one way or another, to bring me closer to my best self. I was just days into 2018 and suddenly had access to dozens of meditation sessions that spanned the self-improvement spectrum. Feeling distracted? Here, try this 10-session course on productivity. Not sleeping well? You definitely need to unwind with a guided body scan. Suffering from burnout? There’s a meditation (or 100) for you Read more…

‘Broverwatch’ is a group of guys who get together to play games and talk about their feelings

TwitterFacebook

At three o’clock every Sunday afternoon, a group of four British lads get together to play video games. This might sound like a pretty standard Sunday, but these chaps congregate so they can talk about their mental health, their feelings, and, well, how crap they are at video games.

They call themselves “Broverwatch.” (And, yeah, they really love playing Overwatch.)

Don’t let the project’s name fool you: Broverwatch couldn’t be further from the bro-y, alpha male get-together you might be imagining. Social media producer Duncan Vicat-Brown—one of the four “bros”—says the project started up because “men don’t talk about their feelings enough.”  Read more…
