Microsoft Hololens 2 ushers in the next generation of augmented reality

TwitterFacebook

Mobile World Congress is primarily a show for new phone announcements, but Microsoft used the show to unveil its brand new HoloLens 2.

The new augmented reality headset is sleeker-looking, more comfortable, and more powerful than the previous generation that debuted in 2016. But most importantly, HoloLens 2 has a much wider field of view (FOV) — more than double the FOV of the original HoloLens — to enable more immersive mixed reality experiences.

Without a doubt, the extremely limited FOV was the HoloLens’ biggest weakness. And it looks like Microsoft’s listened to all of our complaints. Read more…

Huawei’s new MateBook X Pro and MateBook 14 are great alternatives to a MacBook Pro

TwitterFacebook

Huawei wants to be known for more than just its excellent Android phones. Last year, the tech titan surprised everyone with the thin and powerful MateBook X Pro — arguably one of the best laptops of the 2018 — as a serious competitor to Apple’s MacBook Pro.

At Mobile World Congress, Huawei announced a revamped version with updated specs including a faster Intel 8th-generation Core i7 processor, more powerful discrete graphics, faster wired and wireless connectivity, and several new ways to wirelessly connect a Huawei phone to boost productivity.

Huawei also took the wraps off a more affordable MateBook 14 with many of the same features. It’s a great time to consider a Windows 10 laptop if you’re not satisfied with the compromises in Apple’s latest MacBook Pros. Read more…

Xiaomi has a 5G phone and its killer feature is the price

TwitterFacebook

Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is known for launching full-featured phones with low prices, and the company’s event ahead of the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona did not stray far from that concept.

On Sunday, Xiaomi launched the Mi Mix 3 5G, a powerful phone with 5G capabilities that costs 599 euros ($680).

The Mi Mix 3 5G is exactly the same as the regular Mi Mix 3, only it comes with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 855 chips and the company’s X50 5G modem. Xiaomi claims the X50 allows for really fast 5G performance; one example says users will be able to download a 15-minute 1,080p video, or twenty-six 320 Kbps mp3 files, in just 1 second.  Read more…

6 major challenges foldable phones need to overcome to prove they’re not a fad

Foldable phones are really, finally, happening this year. But almost nobody should buy one until their many kinks are worked out.
Earlier this week, Samsung upstaged its own Galaxy S10 unveiling (all four of them) with another big announcement: its f…

Samsung Galaxy S10, S10e, and S10+ take premium Android phones to the next level

TwitterFacebook

No matter how much better the camera is on the Google Pixel 3 or how fast the OnePlus 6T is, no one makes Android phones quite like Samsung.

After 10 years of iterating the Galaxy phone line, Samsung has arrived at the Galaxy S10 — easily the company’s most exciting phone in years.

There are three versions of the Galaxy S10: the 5.8-inch S10e, the 6.1-inch S10, and the 6.4-inch S10+.

Each variant has a screen that covers even more of the front, provides better performance, and features in-display fingerprint sensors. The Galaxy S10 and S10+ even come equipped with three cameras. In short: Samsung’s latest Android phones might just be the most feature-packed smartphones ever created. Read more…

Samsung 5G Galaxy S10 is a monster phone you’ll be able to buy this year

TwitterFacebook

As if three new Galaxy S10 phones weren’t enough, Samsung also announced a fourth version — its first phone to support 5G — at its Unpacked event in San Francisco.

The “Galaxy S10 5G” is more than just a phone that works on 5G networks. It’s the largest Galaxy S phone yet with the biggest battery and four cameras instead of three on the S10 and S10+.

It’s an absolute monster of a phone.

With a 6.7-inch display, the Galaxy S10 5G will have the largest screen of any phone from Samsung’s Galaxy S series. Samsung says the phone’s dimensions will be about the same as the Galaxy Note 9’s. Read more…

Faster 5G phones are coming even though nobody has a 5G phone yet

TwitterFacebook

Mobile chip giant Qualcomm is already leading the 5G charge with key technologies such as the Snapdragon 855 chip for phones that can be configured with an X50 5G modem for faster cellular data speeds.

But even though nobody has a 5G phone yet — more than 30 devices expected to ship with the first-gen X50 5G modem — Qualcomm’s already planning for even faster and more power-efficient 5G devices.

Ahead of Mobile World Congress, Qualcomm is announcing the Snapdragon X55 5G modem, its second-generation 5G modem for mobile devices.

We’re one week removed from the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, where LG will be one of many smartphone companies to launch new flagship phones.

LG has already told us some details about its upcoming devices, but now a leaked photo (courtesy of leaker Evan Blass) shows the LG G8 ThinQ from all sides.
