Microsoft teases HoloLens 2 in new video

TwitterFacebook

Microsoft might announce the new generation of its mixed reality headset, the HoloLens, at an event later this month.

On Monday, Microsoft’s Technical Fellow for AI Perception and Mixed Reality in the Cloud (you gotta love Microsoft’s job titles), Alex Kipman, published a teaser video for the event, and it sure makes it look like HoloLens 2 is coming.

The video, titled “2.24.19 #MWC19” — the date and tagline for the event held one day before the official start of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona — is quite mysterious. Lumps of silicon are turned into chips, ice cubes melt, optical fibre intertwines — it’s all nice to look at but doesn’t really tell us much about the upcoming device.  Read more…

Energizer to launch 26 new phones this month and no, your eyes aren’t deceiving you

You may be forgiven for not knowing that Energizer makes smartphones.
The company, known primarily for its batteries (and that bunny ad), actually has quite a few in its lineup, though the devices it sells are mostly niche products: rugged phones, ph…

Huawei teases foldable phone in new invite

TwitterFacebook

Huawei’s foldable phone is coming in about three weeks.

This is according to a new teaser for a company event on Feb 24, ahead of the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona.

The image and the tweet don’t reveal much, but the image clearly shows a foldable device of some sort. Given previous indications that Huawei plans to launch a foldable phone (though the plan to launch before Samsung likely won’t materialize), the hint is clear enough.

A bunch of 5G smartphones are coming this month

TwitterFacebook

Mobile World Congress, which kicks off on Feb. 25 in Barcelona this year, will be hot. Besides foldable phones and hole-punch cameras, another trend we’ll see at this year’s event will be 5G.

And we’re not just talking about tests and promises of crazy-fast internet speeds sometime in the future — we’ll actually see several new 5G phones at the show.

Today, two major smartphone manufacturers, LG and Huawei, announced they would be launching 5G devices at the show.

LG, which is known for trickling out details about upcoming devices ahead of major launches, said on Thursday it would unveil its first-ever 5G smartphone at the MWC.  Read more…

Doogee is the most exciting phone maker you’ve never heard of

TwitterFacebook

When it comes to smartphones, everyone looks to Apple or Samsung or any of a handful of established phone makers like LG or Google or Huawei to provide innovation, but I think it’s time to start paying attention to a virtually unknown company called Doogee.

Doogee (as tempting as it is to pronounce the name like a certain kid TV doctor, it’s actually doo-jee) is a Chinese company that mostly makes budget phones you couldn’t pay me to ever use. But it’s not these budget phones that are so fascinating — Doogee’s actually busting its ass to make some legitimately futuristic phones that keep making me turn my head. Read more…

Asus ZenFone 5 will trick people into believing you have an iPhone X

TwitterFacebook

It had to happen: Android phone makers are adopting the iPhone X’s notch.

One of the first major manufacturers to do it is Asus, whose ZenFone 5 is a dead ringer for Apple’s flagship, with a notch on the top bezel that hides the selfie camera, sensors, and speaker.

There are differences, of course: With a 6.2-inch screen, the ZenFone 5 is larger than the iPhone X. Its notch is a bit narrower, and its bottom bezels is a bit bigger than the one on the iPhone X (there’s no fingerprint sensor there, though — it resides on the other side of the phone).  Read more…

SanDisk’s insane 400GB microSD card is now also the world’s fastest

TwitterFacebook

Six months ago, SanDisk unveiled the world’s first 400GB microSD card and made me feel like god having so much data storage on the tip of my finger.

Now, at Mobile World Congress, the storage company’s back to explode heads with a newer version that’s more than 50 percent faster.

The new “Extreme A2 microSD UHS-1 microSDXC” card’s the same physical size and capacity as the old one, and it’s red and gold instead of red and silver; however, it’s no longer the world’s largest microSD card anymore because that honor belongs to the 512GB card by Integral Memory — but it’s still hella fast.
