Donald Glover, in addition to delivering a hilarious round of sketches on Saturday Night Live, whipped out his Childish Gambino hat and performed on the storied show.
But while all eyes were on the Studio 8H stage, Gambino simultaneously dropped a new single and music video called “This Is America.” Since its release, the video has racked up over 2 million views as of publishing this, and it’s easy to understand why.
Gambino packs in a whole lot into in “This Is America.” It’s a major departure from the funk he’s given us previously but it works wonderfully in the context of conversations this track sparks. In addition to the musical references (there are adlibs from Billboard-charting artists like 21 Savage, Young Thug, Big Sean, Blocboy JB, and more), the visuals are a nuanced examination of life in America — particularly as a black person in this country. It’s been months since Janelle Monae released her subtly queer masterpiece, “Make Me Feel,” and I’m still just at the beginning stages of my recovery period.
Unfortunately — or maybe fortunately — there’s no time to heal. On Tuesday, the artist released her latest music video, “Pynk.” It’s thick with queer innuendo and feminist iconography. Evidence A: The giant “pussypants” she and her fellow dancers wears throughout. Evidence B: The guest appearance of Tessa Thompson, rumored to be Monae’s partner, who actually busts out of her enormous pink vagina pants.

Moms are the freaking best and do not receive nearly enough praise for all the good they do in this world. Oddly, it took Taylor Swift’s new music video for “Delicate” to remind me of this fact.
After Swift’s music video premiered during the iHeartRadio Music Awards on March 11, 17-year-old Megumi Cheng tweeted a heartwarming message of praise to her mother, Junko Cheng, who made a cameo in the video.
“This is my mom. She’s 57 and felt like pursuing acting recently… mostly for shits and giggles, but here she is. So beautiful,” Cheng’s teenage daughter tweeted alongside three still shots of her from the music video. Read more…
