Google hit with $1.7 billion fine for anticompetitive ad practices

The EU is making Google pay for its anti-competitive practices.

On Wednesday, the European Commission ordered Google to pay a huge €1.49 billion antitrust fine (roughly $1.7 billion USD) for “abusive practices in online advertising.”

The Commission determined that Google had engaged in illegal conduct to “cement its dominant market position” with its Adsense program, which had a market share of more than 70 percent from 2006 to 2016 in Europe.

Hundreds of Google’s advertising agreements with major websites were reviewed by the commission, which discovered numerous restrictive clauses that blocked the company’s advertising rivals from competing in the market. Read more…

YouTube pulls advertising from anti-vaccination videos

TwitterFacebook

YouTube said Friday that it would pull advertising from videos that espouse anti-vaccination conspiracy theories, according to BuzzFeed. The action contributes to a growing trend of social media companies taking action to combat the spread of vaccine misinformation online.

Social media companies, including Facebook and YouTube, have recently been facing pressure to get better at this, following inquiries from media and calls from lawmakers. The World Health Organization recently categorized “vaccine hesitancy” as one of 2019’s top threats to global health.

The US is experiencing a measles outbreak — a previously near-eradicated disease — that’s affecting unvaccinated children. Social media has played a significant role in proliferating the false conspiracy that vaccines can cause autism. Read more…

The “pause ad,” as Hulu is calling it, is meant to provide its users with a non-intrusive ad experience. Hulu says they have already been testing out the pause ad, which is how they’ve developed the product which they’re officially unveiling today.

When a viewer pauses their video, a transparent static banner ad will show on their screen. The ad will contain no video or audio. The advertisement is meant to be subtle, non-disruptive and initiated by the viewer so as to not interrupt the video they’re watching.  Read more…
