Mark Hamill: Not having Carrie Fisher around to see ‘The Last Jedi’ is ‘unspeakably tragic’

Carrie Fisher’s death will always sting for Star Wars fans, but The Last Jedi is the first film in the franchise to release into a world without her. Even a year after her passing, costar Mark Hamill and director Rian Johnson struggled to find the wo…

In their own words: Rian Johnson and Mark Hamill on Luke’s journey in ‘The Last Jedi’

“It’s time for the Jedi to end,” Luke Skywalker says in the Last Jedi trailer, his brittle voice dripping disdain for the knights who once protected the galaxy and saved so many lives, including his own.

Let Kumail Nanjiani convince you to go see ‘Star Wars’ with this sweet story about Rian Johnson

TwitterFacebook

Ladies and gentleman, Kumail Nanjiani.

Silicon Valley star and all-round paragon of humanity Kumail Nanjiani gave us all another reason to go see Star Wars: The Last Jedi on Tuesday. He posted a Twitter thread recalling an encounter he had with director Rian Johnson back when he was a red carpet journalist at Comic Con.

THREAD: I know y’all don’t need another reason to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but I’m gonna give you one more. This is a story about its director, @rianjohnson, & why he’s awesome. In 2012, before Silicon Valley, I got a job doing interviews on the red carpet at Comic Con.

John Boyega says ‘The Last Jedi’ will tell us ‘exactly which way’ the Finn/Poe relationship is going

TwitterFacebook

There has been an awakening — have you felt it?

No, we’re not talking about Rey’s burgeoning Force powers; we mean the chemistry between Resistance fighter Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and rebel Stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega) — aka the pairing that the internet has affectionately dubbed “StormPilot.”

The ship that launched a thousand memes has been the talk of the interwebs since The Force Awakens, and Oscar Isaac recently stoked the fires by admitting that he’s “very open to those possible storylines” that might see Poe in a same-sex relationship. But will we actually see any evidence of attraction on screen?  Read more…

Presenting everything we think will happen in ‘The Last Jedi’

TwitterFacebook

LOS ANGELES — Breathe. Just breathe.

On Saturday night, the wait will finally be over — at least for the hundreds of guests (including your humble scribe) gathered at the Shrine Auditorium in Downtown L.A. for the world premiere of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

After that, I will enter Star Wars reviewer exile, unable to publish anything beyond vague tweet-length impressions of the movie until the review embargo lifts next week — at a time that has already got us making a galaxy-shaking prediction. So this moment is my last chance to put any educated guesses at the movie’s content on the record. Read more…

Who’s the least popular Star Wars character ever? Hint: It’s not Jar Jar

TwitterFacebook

Princess Leia Organa wins the Star Wars popularity contest. That should come as no surprise to anyone, but it’s nice to have the evidence in black and white. As for the loser, there’s a twist.

A December poll from Morning Consult asked 2,200 folks about their opinions on Star Wars movies, then cross-tabulated that with their demographics and political preferences. We’ll be pulling details out of this poll for weeks; but for now, let’s concentrate on the characters.

The poll asked respondents their opinions on 25 major characters from the saga. Leia came out on top with a 73% favorability rating — although Luke Skywalker, Chewbacca, Yoda and R2-D2 were all within 2% of her, which happens to be the poll’s margin of error.  Read more…

‘The Last Jedi’ will be the best-reviewed ‘Star Wars’ film of all time

TwitterFacebook

I have a good feeling about this.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will screen for the first time, anywhere, at Saturday night’s premiere at the cavernous Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Social-media reactions will flood out immediately, though critics won’t be able to weigh in with full reviews until a few days later, on Tuesday, December 12 at noon ET.

What that tells us: The best-reviewed Star Wars movie of all time. Yes, better than Empire Strikes Back – and not even with that much difficulty.

From everything I’m seeing, I’m guessing The Last Jedi will fall somewhere between 96% and 98% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes – let’s call it 97% to make it official – making it easily the top Star Wars movie, and definitely among the best-reviewed science fiction films, ever. Read more…

Sorry, Star Wars fans, you’re not getting that Old Republic trilogy you wanted

He’s sympathetic. He loves the subject in question. But alas, that is definitively not what he…

‘Last Jedi’ star played the best Pokémon Go prank on director Rian Johnson

TwitterFacebook

If you love Pokemon and pranks, or if you ever dreamed of being part of a mischievous Star Wars crew, this anecdote from the set of The Last Jedi is going to increase your FOMO.

Filming on The Last Jedi coincided with the release of another worldwide sensation, Pokémon Go. And according to John Boyega, new cast member Kelly Marie Tran (who plays Resistance member Rose Tico) dragged the rest of the cast and crew — especially director Rian Johnson — down the Diglett hole.

“Kelly is responsible for turning the Star Wars set into a Pokémon Go set,” Boyega told Mashable. “Kelly made [Last Jedi director] Rian Johnson walk off set thinking that she found a Pikachu right outside the door.” Read more…

Feast your eyes on these ‘Star Wars’ treasures from the ‘Last Jedi’ junket

Disney treated the press to a secret Star Wars press junket on Sunday, which featured not only a full cast panel discussion but also an impressive compendium of costumes, photographs, and Star Wars merchandise.

The main purpose of the junket was interviews along with a big press conference. The cast and director assembled to talk about the upcoming film, which will be the longest Star Wars movie to date.
