Star Wars fans, stop trying to make Rey’s parents a thing

TwitterFacebook

It’s fascinating to watch conspiracy theories die — their diehard captains still clinging to shards of evidence as the ship of belief cracks and sinks all around them.

We’re watching that happen in two areas of the culture this week. There are the QAnon crazies, whose bizarre pro-Trump theory is taking on water after lawyer Michael Cohen turned on his former boss. Moderators in the Q forums have started banning mentions of Cohen’s name.

Alas, much this same reality-denying dynamic is at work in parts of Star Wars fandom.

The parentage of Rey (Daisy Ridley) was revealed in The Last Jedi way back in December: her parents were drunken nobodies. Still, all these months later, some true believers in discredited theories hold out hope that this plot point will be reversed by J.J. Abrams in the upcoming Episode IX — and some websites are all too ready to attract eyeballs by stoking that belief. Read more…

‘Last Jedi’ director strikes back at Star Wars ‘manbabies’

TwitterFacebook

It is a period of civil war in Star Wars fandom.

We’re nearly seven months on from the release of The Last Jedi, and a certain very vocal minority of fans — you know, the kind who think a film can ruin their childhood — just can’t let it go. And now the director is striking back.

The catalyst for this fresh round of warfare is the fact that Kelly Marie Tran, who played Resistance mechanic Rose Tico, mysteriously deleted all her Instagram posts this week. Tran has not explained why she did this; Mashable has reached out to her publicist for comment. Read more…

‘The Last Jedi’ director Rian Johnson reacts to Stormy Daniels’ review of the movie because that’s where we are now

TwitterFacebook

The porn star Stormy Daniels, who reportedly had an affair with Donald Trump, gave a short review of Star Wars: The Last Jedi on Twitter in December, and the director has finally responded.

Daniels voiced her opinions on the latest Star Wars movie before she entered the spotlight over the last couple of weeks, sharing an explicit “Fuck you Rian Johnson,” pegging her perceived negative thoughts of the film on its director. A month plus later, Johnson responded with a starry-eyed emoji.

Fuck you Rian Johnson.

You can thank Carrie Fisher for her zingers in ‘The Last Jedi’

TwitterFacebook

Carrie Fisher did more than reprise her role as General Leia Organa in the newest installment of the Star Wars franchise.

Before her death at age 60 last year, she brought her own wit and humor with her into The Last Jedi — and director Rian Johnson was all about it. He included some one-liners that have that characteristic Fisher bite, which she wrote herself.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Johnson credited Fisher with at least two quippy lines. The first was a line about her new hairstyle she makes to Mark Hamill’s character, Luke Skywalker. Read more…

Whatever you do, don’t watch ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ in 3D

TwitterFacebook

“Let the past die. Kill it!”

Kylo Ren’s calm, yet threatening monologue from Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi (this isn’t a spoiler — it’s in the trailer) couldn’t be more apt for the 3D version of the movie. It sucks. It’s the worst way to watch Rian Johnson’s flick.

3D movies — as a format in movie theaters — need to die. Movie studios should kill them. But they won’t unless we, moviegoers, grab Ren’s tri-bladed lightsaber and stab this technology in the heart and twist it until 3D’s lifeless body falls off the catwalk and into the abyss.
