‘Black Panther’ gets first bad review for dumbest reason imaginable

Critical reviews are always subjective opinions. So in general, you can’t really say a reviewer got it objectively “wrong.”
Unless, that is, you’re referring to the first negative review of Black Panther, courtesy of the Irish Independent’s Ed Power….

‘Black Panther’ builds a world you’ll want to return to again and again

TwitterFacebook

At the end of the day, Black Panther is just another movie.

But it sure doesn’t feel that way when you’re watching it.

Black Panther perfects what the Marvel Cinematic Universe has always done so well: build a world so richly rendered, it’s almost a letdown to reach the end of the film and realize it’s time to return to our own reality.

In this case, the world is the fictional African nation of Wakanda – the most technologically advanced country on Earth, which got that way by jealously guarding its wealth and knowledge from everyone else. The result is a land untouched by the horrors of European conquest and blessed by the bounty of the land (specifically, by a rare and valuable naturally occurring metal known as vibranium).  Read more…

‘Ophelia’ starring Daisy Ridley leaves a lot to be desired

TwitterFacebook

The premise of Claire McCarthy’s new movie, Ophelia, is simple. What if William Shakespeare’s Hamlet was told not through the mopey prince, but his love interest, Ophelia? Perhaps then, she could have a personality instead of a watery tragic end.

That idea might have been interesting if fully realized, which this Ophelia, which premiered this week at the Sundance Film Festival, is not. The movie makes a few intriguing choices but stumbles in terms of craft and writing – neither of which you can really sacrifice when adapting the Bard.

Yet not everything in the state of Denmark was rotten. After a clichéd voiceover, Ophelia’s (Daisy Ridley) story follows her from a humble childhood to living among royalty as a lady-in-waiting to Hamlet’s troubled queen mum, Gertrude (Naomi Watts). These early scenes set up a more promising movie: the setting looks to have a painterly quality, the flowing gowns are a vivid contrast to plain castle rock of their home and the supporting cast is wonderfully diverse. It’s a shame that our Ophelia gets into trouble because of the rich white family in power.   Read more…

‘The Last Jedi’ will be the best-reviewed ‘Star Wars’ film of all time

TwitterFacebook

I have a good feeling about this.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will screen for the first time, anywhere, at Saturday night’s premiere at the cavernous Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Social-media reactions will flood out immediately, though critics won’t be able to weigh in with full reviews until a few days later, on Tuesday, December 12 at noon ET.

What that tells us: The best-reviewed Star Wars movie of all time. Yes, better than Empire Strikes Back – and not even with that much difficulty.

From everything I’m seeing, I’m guessing The Last Jedi will fall somewhere between 96% and 98% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes – let’s call it 97% to make it official – making it easily the top Star Wars movie, and definitely among the best-reviewed science fiction films, ever. Read more…

Rotten Tomatoes is hiding its ‘Justice League’ score, but we’ve done the math

TwitterFacebook

Critics are in on Justice League, but Rotten Tomatoes won’t be revealing its official score until Thursday, just after the stroke of midnight. Someone finally thought to use the Tomatometer to drive eyeballs to a live streaming event, and so here we are.

But we’ve seen enough reviews by now to call it: This film will wind up rotten.

Of the 39 reviews we found online by early Wednesday morning, 22 leaned rotten, while 17 leaned fresh (and many of those just barely). That makes our early, highly unofficial aggregated score 44% fresh – well shy of the 60% mark needed for that coveted red sticker. Read more…

Uh oh, looks like that ‘Justice League’ Rotten Tomatoes score could be bad

TwitterFacebook

One day, 16 hours, 10 minutes and 0 seconds – that’s how much time Warner Bros. is allowing between the embargo lift on reviews for Justice League and its first public screenings.

And if history tells us anything, that means the most ambitious DC Extended Universe film to-date could also be among its worst-reviewed.

A couple of months ago, we took a look at the relationship between critics’ embargo times and release dates (as well as other studio marketing behavior) and found a striking correlation: When they allow more than two full days for critical consensus to gather, the scores tend to be fresh (above 60%). Anything at two days or less trends toward rotten.  Read more…
