Roku’s Premiere streaming boxes are tiny, cheap, and support 4K

TwitterFacebook

Roku doesn’t believe that there’s one streaming player for everyone.

Launching early next month, two new Roku streaming players focus on affordability and 4K support. The Premiere and Premiere+ will be $39.99 and $49.99 respectively. Both are cheaper than Amazon’s $69.99 4K Fire TV.

Both of these are tiny and fit comfortably in the palm of your hand. During a briefing with Roku, I first thought these were new streaming sticks, which tend to be watered-down versions of a full-on player. However, it quickly became clear that, although the form factor is small, these are full-featured streaming devices. Read more…

Now you don’t even need a Roku box to watch the Roku Channel

TwitterFacebook

Roku, the company that makes those little boxes that stream online video to your television, has a free streaming channel called the Roku Channel. You may not know this if you don’t have one of said boxes, but it’s good information since now you don’t need a Roku player to watch it.

After creating a free Roku account, you can watch free, ad-supported movies, TV shows, digital shorts, and even live broadcasts at TheRokuChannel.com from any browser. The content comes from a wide array of Roku’s established partners — companies who’ve already been bringing their content to Roku’s physical streaming devices.  Read more…

Roku’s wireless speakers aim to make TV audio more bearable

TwitterFacebook

TV sound quality can vary wildly, but upgrading it can often cost a ton of money.

Roku aims to make better TV sound more accessible with its TV Wireless Speakers, a pair of easy-to-set-up stereo speakers that cost $199.99. The speakers themselves are small rectangles (sitting vertically like a Sonos One) and come in a pair, along with two remotes. However, the company did some neat work with the technology inside them.

The only cable you need is a power cord since connection from the speakers to the TV is via Roku Connect, a proprietary connection that eliminates the need for extra wiring — but also means the TV Wireless Speakers only work with TVs that support Roku’s tech. The setup seems pretty straightforward, but we have to wait to test these out in person. Read more…
