These kids training to play soccer like Neymar in the World Cup all deserve an A+

TwitterFacebook

When you’re practicing your soccer skills, it’s important to cover all the basics: passing, tackling, dribbling, shooting.. and, of course, Neymar-ing.

Yep, that’s right, Neymar-ing. On Wednesday, YouTuber Soccerdrill shared a video of a group of kids “practicing ‘The Neymar'”. As you probably guessed, it basically involves instantly dropping to the ground and rolling around in the semblance of extreme agony.

Here’s the master himself, showing how it’s done:

Japan leaves touching thank you note and a spotless locker room after World Cup loss

TwitterFacebook

If the World Cup was determined strictly on the basis of sportsmanship, Japan’s team would win this thing no question.

Sadly, though, that’s not how it goes — as Japan knows all too well. Their mens team lost Monday’s knock-out round contest to Belgium at almost the last possible moment, after holding a two-goal lead.

That didn’t stop them from performing the ultimate class act, though. After warming the world’s hearts by remaining on the pitch to give thanks to their dedicated fan base despite the agonizing loss, Team Japan took things next level as evidenced by the below photo, reportedly shared by a FIFA official.  Read more…

Kangaroo invades field, decides it wants to play goalkeeper

TwitterFacebook

Although there’s a lot of them around, Australians will have you believe that kangaroos aren’t actually hopping up and down our city streets.

Then something like this happens: A kangaroo delayed the second half of a match between soccer teams Blue Devils FC and Canberra FC on Sunday, when it hopped onto the field and set itself in front of goal.

While Australia has no shortage of decent goalkeepers, this little fella is also pretty adept at keeping a clean sheet.

A brief summary of why the second half was delayed today at Deakin, between @BLUE_DEVILSFC & @CanberraFC1 .

Football matches land on your table thanks to augmented reality

It’s World Cup season, so that means that even articles about machine learning have to have a football angle. Today’s concession to the beautiful game is a system that takes 2D videos of matches and recreates them in 3D so you can watch them on your coffee table (assuming you have some kind of augmented reality setup, which you almost certainly don’t). It’s not as good as being there, but it might be better than watching it on TV.

This country’s prime minister intervened because people couldn’t watch the World Cup

TwitterFacebook

Never get between fans and the World Cup.

Australia’s Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has stepped in after people complained of streaming issues with Optus, which holds the right to locally broadcast all the games at the tournament.

On Twitter, Turnbull said he had spoken with the telecommunications company’s CEO, Allen Lew, who reassured the problems would be fixed by Monday night.

I have spoken with the Optus CEO, Allen Lew. He assures me he is giving the World Cup streaming problems his personal attention and he believes it will be fixed this evening.
