Artificial ‘earthquake’ detected in Mexico after World Cup goal

TwitterFacebook

Mexico is now the gold standard for fan celebration.

A small artificial earthquake was detected in Mexico City on Sunday after Hirving Lozano scored a goal — the only goal of the game — during Mexico’s World Cup matchup against Germany.

According to SIMMSA, which monitors seismic activity in the area, the earthquake was likely caused by “massive jumping” directly after the goal. Hell yeah.

World Cup opening game proved a little tricky for people with colour blindness

TwitterFacebook

Did you have a little trouble distinguishing between teams at the World Cup opener? You weren’t alone.

During the opening game between Saudi Arabia and host country Russia on Thursday, people watching who have colour blindness complained on Twitter they had trouble identifying which team they were cheering for.

Why? The teams wore red (Russia) and green (Saudi Arabia), two of the colours people with a type of colour vision deficiency (CVD) are unable to distinguish between.

More than a few people were upset.

A ‘clairvoyant’ cat has predicted who will win the World Cup opening match

TwitterFacebook

Psychic animals predicting the results of big events is pretty much a time-honoured tradition.

We’ve previously had a Scottish goat divining the US election result (it got it wrong), and — many years ago — we had an octopus called Paul who used to predict the winners of World Cup matches (he sadly passed away back in 2010).

Well, now it’s Achilles the cat’s turn.

Achilles the cat, who lives in the Hermitage in St Petersburg, is going to be the official oracle for the World Cup in Russia and predict the outcome of matches. He looks thrilledhttps://t.co/zzw7mBxfXH pic.twitter.com/vkTmyrbMSW

Nifty Spanish reporter gets around French-only rule with phone translator

TwitterFacebook

As the French national soccer team gears up for this week’s World Cup, speculation continues to mount over the playing future of one of the team’s star forwards, Antoine Griezmann.

And journalists want to know what the heck is going on — in any language.

Griezmann, who plays for Spanish team Atlético Madrid, is rumoured to be moving to rivals FC Barcelona next season. The striker has so far confirmed that he’s made up his mind, although he stopped short of revealing where he’s going to.

To stop Spanish reporters from constantly bothering Griezmann about his plans, team France’s press officer only allowed questions to be asked in French during a conference on Tuesday. Read more…

La Liga spies on fútbol fans through its app

TwitterFacebook

The unthinkable has happened: an app maker is actually admitting it’s secretly listening to us!

The official streaming app of Spain’s La Liga soccer division has been listening to its users, according to Spanish newspaper El Diario. The app activates the microphone when GPS detects that users are in a bar, all in order to discover whether venues are playing illegal streams. Yikes!

La Liga is one of the top soccer leagues in the world, with superstar Lionel Messi as a player on the team FC Barcelona. The app has over 10 million installs in the Google Play store. Read more…

Spanish soccer app caught using microphone and GPS to snoop

If you’ve ever found yourself wondering why an app is requesting microphone access when there doesn’t seem to be any logical reason why it should need to snoop on the sounds from your surroundings, hold that thought — and take a closer look at the T&Cs. Because it might turn out that spying is exactly […]

Bees invade soccer match, causing players to hit the ground

TwitterFacebook

Pitch invasions are usually unwelcome in sport, and especially if the invaders can sting you.

That’s what happened to players of Liga de Portoviejo and Manta FC of Ecuador’s second division on Saturday, when bees descended 26 minutes into the game at Reales Tamarindos Stadium.

Players and officials hit the ground in near unison, leaving them on the deck for half a minute as they waited for the flying insects to pass.

Soccer player takes to Instagram to defend gun tattoo

TwitterFacebook

England footballer Raheem Sterling has taken to Instagram to defend his new tattoo, after an article published in The Sun on Monday highlighted criticism made against it by anti-gun campaigners.

The tattoo, which extends down the striker’s right leg, appears to be of an M16 assault rifle.

Plaque honoring Olympic soccer player Brandi Chastain couldn’t look less like her

TwitterFacebook

When will sculptors learn how to sculpt?

On Monday, soccer player Brandi Chastain was inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame. This is well deserved as Chastain is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and a two-time World Cup champion.

Unfortunately, though she is joining a group of notable and honored athletes, the plaque made in her honor is joining a league with a different sort of fame.
