Waymo is duping us all with its new self-driving taxi service

TwitterFacebook

Well, Waymo did it. It launched a self-driving taxi service before the end of 2018. This is, on the surface, exactly what it said it would do, and it didn’t even come down to the wire — it’s only Dec. 5.

But a closer examination shows this isn’t what Waymo once promised eager would-be riders.

Basically, Waymo slapped a “launch” label to its already-existing early rider self-driving car service, started charging its select group of about 400 preexisting customers for rides, and is letting them talk about the experience and even bring a guest along for a ride. Read more…

Waymo launches self-driving taxi service, but caveats abound

TwitterFacebook

The future is here: Waymo One, a self-driving taxi service by Alphabet’s self-driving company Waymo, has officially launched

Unfortunately, to paraphrase sci-fi prophet William Gibson, this future is very unevenly distributed. The service will first be available to “early riders” — people who’ve already used Waymo technology — and only in Chandler, Tempe, Mesa, and Gilbert, which are all cities near Phoenix, Arizona.

And the cars will actually have a human in the driver’s seat — Waymo-trained drivers who will supervise the cars, at least at first.

Robot couriers scoop up early-stage cash

Much of the last couple of decades of innovation has centered around finding ways to get what we want without leaving the sofa. But there’s a catch: We can’t lie around ordering pizzas if someone still has to deliver them.

Waymo, take the wheel: Self-driving cars go fully driverless on California roads

Self-driving startup Waymo, a Google spin-off owned by parent company Alphabet, has been granted the first permit in California to begin driverless testing on public roads. Yes, that means self-driving cars without a human behind the wheel will be cruising around California, beginning with a limited geographic area in Silicon Valley. The company’s autonomous vehicles are a common sight […]

Waymo is testing what it should charge for its robotaxi service

Self-driving startup Waymo, a Google spin -off owned by parent company Alphabet, has started to test pricing models for rides in its autonomous vehicles in Phoenix, the latest indication that the company is preparing to launch a commercial robotaxi service. Waymo has not launched a wide-scale commercial robotaxi service in Phoenix — or anywhere — just yet. But it is […]

Here’s the electric Jaguar that Waymo wants to turn into a self-driving car

TwitterFacebook

Waymo’s self-driving car service is supposed to kick off by the end of this year, but before the robot cars start taking riders around, you can experience or even own some of the cars Waymo’s using in its growing autonomous fleet.

Back in March, Waymo announced that 20,000 of Jaguar’s all-electric I-Pace crossovers would be used for its self-driving taxi service. Now the British car maker’s first electric vehicle is here — deliveries in the U.S. start next month.

The car was on display and available for rides Wednesday just south of San Francisco for the first leg of the Jaguar Electrifies experience. After this week the car goes on to Miami, Los Angeles, and finally New York. Read more…

Morgan Stanley: Tesla’s autonomous ride-sharing network is worth one-tenth of Waymo

Morgan Stanley has valued Tesla’s autonomous vehicle ride-sharing business, which does not yet exist, at $17.7 billion, about one-tenth of Waymo’s value, yet still above GM Cruise, the investment firm said in a research note published Tuesday. The $17.7 billion valuation, or about $95 per Tesla share, is notably lower than the $244 a share […]
