Everything you need to know to enjoy curling, the Winter Olympics’ best obscure sport

TwitterFacebook

The Olympics are here and besides the pomp, circumstance, and human interest stories, it also means our lives are about to be taken over by really obscure sports we get hooked on for two weeks and then forget about until the next Olympics.

The Summer Olympics have a bevy of these — water polo and handball being among my favorites — but the Winter Olympics has the very best of these sports: curling.

Like shuffleboard on ice, curling is a sport that unfolds slowly but is no less captivating. It can set up thrilling moments, even if we don’t really understand what, exactly, might be going on.   Read more…

Mmm, protein: Norwegian Olympic team accidentally orders 15,000 eggs

TwitterFacebook

Take heart: You’re not the only one who has trouble with Google Translate.

The chefs for Norway’s Winter Olympics team received a shipment of 15,000 eggs last week thanks to an error on the translation service. They’d meant to order 1,500, so it was an understandable mistake — but it was also way too many eggs.

Way, way too many eggs.

OL-leiren bestilte 1500 egg gjennom å oversette via Google Translate. Men det slo feil. 15.000 ble levert på døra. Vi ønsker lykke til og håper at de norske gullhåpene er glade – veldig glade – i egg: 😁 pic.twitter.com/qaWVpq1Xgy

With the next edition of the games getting ready to start, it’s a perfect time to look back 20 years to the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan.  Read more…

Nigeria is going to its first Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, next year — thanks to the women’s bobsled team.

The African country has never competed in the Winter Olympics, but after the bobsled team qualified this week, Nigeria’s green and white flag will be represented at the games.

The three-woman team was elated after qualifying in Canada. To qualify the team had to compete in five races, according to ESPN. The newly formed Bobsled & Skeleton Federation of Nigeria Instagram account was filled excited poses and exclamatory posts. Read more…
