How to follow your new favorite winter sports even though the Olympics are over

While icy tears roll down our cheeks, the Winter Olympics bid farewell for another four years. And, yet, there’s a lot to be thankful for because now we have some new favorite sports that we can obsess about while we wait for the 2022 Beijing Games.

U.S. team takes the gold in curling, a dramatic win and historic Olympic moment

Despite the insane odds, Team USA is bringing home a gold medal for a beloved sport which confuses many: curling.
It’s the sort of story that prompts a cinematic retelling years later. After losing to Norway less than a week ago, the U.S. men’…

Kirstie Alley vs. U.S. curling squad is the Olympic argument we never expected

TwitterFacebook

Do not piss off Team USA’s men’s curling team — something Kirstie Alley is learning the hard way.

The actress tweeted an off-hand thought while watching the Winter Olympics on Monday, calling the sport of curling “boring.”

Im not trying to be mean but…… Curling is boring

— Kirstie Alley (@kirstiealley) February 20, 2018

Needless to say, the U.S. men’s curling team thought, yeah, it was mean. So, they fired back.

We’re not trying to be mean either but your movies weren’t exactly riveting theater Kirstie#justsaying #curling #rockit #TeamUSA https://t.co/8q9KtxvCPe

The Norwegian curling team wore red and pink pants with hearts for Valentine’s Day

It’s pretty cold in Pyeongchang, but Team Ulsrud’s outfit choice will warm your heart.

The Norwegian curlers sported these showstoppers during the men’s curling event at the Winter Olympics on Wednesday: bright red and pink trousers, complete with layers of hearts for Valentine’s Day.

Olympic curling is a great way to trick your children into cleaning the house

TwitterFacebook

Need to clean your house but keep dragging your feet? Just pretend you’re curling.

Better yet, get your children to pretend they’re curling — a genius idea perpetuated by the Olympics network itself, NBC. All you need is a broom or Swiffer and a rounded object of some kind. Anything will work, because you are not competing for any medals. You are in your own home!

See? A clean floor and a child who thinks he is an Olympic athlete! You truly couldn’t ask for more. Read more…

A complete guide to bluffing your way through the Winter Olympics

TwitterFacebook

They’re here! The Winter Olympics have returned to fill our lives with two weeks of skiing, skating, and hot luge action and make these deep, dark days of late winter before baseball spring training a little less awful.

The Winter Olympics is one of the few events when the entire globe will be following along — even if their TV coverage is all a little bit different. The ratings in the U.S. will certainly be huge and the results a hot topic around the workplace and internet.

But this only happens every four years and many of the sports aren’t exactly mainstream. So it’s understandable that you might be a little lost while gorging yourself on athletic competition.  Read more…

Everything you need to know to enjoy curling, the Winter Olympics’ best obscure sport

TwitterFacebook

The Olympics are here and besides the pomp, circumstance, and human interest stories, it also means our lives are about to be taken over by really obscure sports we get hooked on for two weeks and then forget about until the next Olympics.

The Summer Olympics have a bevy of these — water polo and handball being among my favorites — but the Winter Olympics has the very best of these sports: curling.

Like shuffleboard on ice, curling is a sport that unfolds slowly but is no less captivating. It can set up thrilling moments, even if we don’t really understand what, exactly, might be going on.   Read more…

The Norwegian curling team’s pants are the real stars of the Olympics

TwitterFacebook

Before the Winter Olympics in 2010, curling pants were fairly nondescript. Curling, as the New York Times later wrote, was a “sport in which athletes traditionally wear black and draw little notice outside curling circles.”

But the Norwegian men’s team in Vancouver changed everything. Instead of basic black, they wore so-ugly-you’ll-love-them argyle pants in red, indigo, and white — the colors of the Norwegian flag.
