Little Baby Bum has billions of views on YouTube — and just sold for millions

Did you know that a near hour-long collection of children’s nursery rhymes set to 3D animation is the 20th most popular YouTube video ever?

The video, with over 2 billion views and counting on the site, was created by the YouTube channel Little Baby Bum.

And the husband-and-wife duo behind the popular channel just sold Little Baby Bum, likely for millions of dollars.

The exact sale price is confidential, but a social media marketing firm told Bloomberg that the London couple likely made between £6 million to £8.5 million ($7.8 million to $11.1 million).

YouTube lets parents handpick videos their kids can see

YouTube is taking some extra steps to give parents more control over what their children watch.

In a blog post today, YouTube announced two updates to their YouTube Kids app to improve user experience for the millions of children and parents who use the app.

The biggest update, which YouTube first introduced in April, is the rollout of parent-approved content. Android users around the world can handpick every video or channel their child is allowed to view through the YouTube Kids app (this ability is forthcoming soon to users on iOS devices).

Now, with a single settings change — simply click “approved content only” on each child’s profile — parents can make sure their children only watch the content that they’ve manually selected. Read more…

Honestly, what the heck is happening on YouTube?

One of the internet’s most famed catchphrases is about porn: that any sort of erotica you could want or imagine, no matter how niche or messed up, exists somewhere online.

That shouldn’t be the case for YouTube — a video community monitored for hate, violence, abuse, obscenity, and more. But with each new discovery of disturbing footage after repulsive video trend, it seems that the populist platform is just as out of control as the internet on which it lives. From child porn to animal abuse, it’s time to ask, Google, what the heck is happening on YouTube?

On Tuesday, BuzzFeed uncovered that images of beastiality are extremely “easy to find” on YouTube. Now, this doesn’t pertain to actual videos of beastiality. Instead, BuzzFeed found that (totally creepy, but not explicitly human-to-animal sexual) videos featuring scantily clad women petting or grooming animals were essentially marketed with explicit beastiality thumbnails. YouTube deleted 150,000 kids videos that were targeted by child predators

YouTube has a problem with child predators, and the video platform finally revealed concrete ways it’s addressing the problem.

YouTube has deleted 150,000 videos that had become targets for comments by child predators, the site confirmed to Vice. The company also deleted 270 accounts and turned off comments for 625,000 videos.

YouTube also removed ads from another 2 million videos and 50,000 channels to stop those channels from profiting from disturbing content.

“Over the past week we removed ads from nearly 2 million videos and over 50,000 channels masquerading as family-friendly content,” YouTube told Vice. “Content that endangers children is abhorrent and unacceptable to us.” Read more…
