Fiona the Hippo celebrates her big 1,000 pound milestone

The world’s most beloved hippo, Fiona, celebrated the holidays just like we do: by watching the scales closely.
The Cincinnati Zoo’s famous hippo has officially topped 1,000 pounds, up from a whopping 770-ish pounds from her Jan. 2017 premature birth weight of 29 pounds.

Fiona still has quite a ways to go: The average adult female hippo can weigh close to 3,000 pounds. But the milestone is still a pretty big deal, big enough that the zoo held a special 1K Walk in early Dec. as Fiona closed in on the big four-digit mark. Read more…

It’s Fiona the hippo’s first birthday. She did it! And she deserves a cake.
The baby hippo, born six weeks premature at the Cincinnati Zoo last January, has become a bonafide celebrity in her first year of life, making headlines with everything from her first steps to that time she crashed an engagement photo.
But Fiona is more than a cute baby animal (although she is certainly queen of that category). She’s a success story that wasn’t always a sure thing. And her survival is the result of intuitive, amazing round-the-clock care from her keepers — as well as some kind of Fiona-specific tenacity that she probably stores in her ears. Read more…

Fiona the hippo, a celebrity, will probably not be making an appearance at her first birthday party. But that’s okay. It’s still a very good party.
Per zoo policy, hippos are only allowed to venture outdoors in temperatures above 50 degrees. So although it’s pretty warm for mid-February in Cincinnati — high 40s — Fiona and her mom, Bibi, will likely spend party day (Saturday) in their cozy indoor habitat.
Celebrating Fiona is always a good idea, though, so zoo patrons are already out in droves to sign her birthday card, eat cake and ice cream, adorn themselves with temporary Fiona tattoos, take photos in a Fiona-themed photobooth, and participate in other “hippo themed activities.” Read more…

Fiona the hippo, queen of the Cincinnati Zoo and our national daughter, has had a banner year.
She swam. She ate snacks. Friends, she lived her life. And she did it against all odds! It’s true: Fiona, whose ears wiggle when she pops out of the water, is the only being on earth who had a pleasant 2017. And she deserved every second.
