Investigation reveals allegations of unchecked abuse inside U.S. figure skating

TwitterFacebook

In an explosive statement released Monday morning, the U.S. Center for SafeSport has shed new light on what it is calling a “a culture in figure skating that allowed grooming and abuse to go unchecked for too long.”

The statement stems from SafeSport’s investigation into allegations levied against former U.S. pairs champion John Coughlin. In January, Coughlin was suspended by SafeSport for unreported reasons; a day later, he died by suicide.

In early January, before his suspension was announced, Coughlin denied any wrongdoing in an email to USA Today’s Christine Brennan, calling them “unfounded.” Following his death, Brennan reported that three claims of sexual misconduct, including two by minors, had been filed against the skater. Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir skate on Olympic ice for (probably) the last time

TwitterFacebook

After winning gold and making millions of people wonder if they’re in love, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir have skated on Olympic ice for what is perhaps the last time.

The ice dancing pair has not officially decided if they’re retiring from competition, but there’s a good chance they are — which made their performance at Sunday’s figure skating gala particularly special.

Wondering if Virtue and Moir’s chemistry lessens outside high-pressure competition? Spoiler: it does not!

Breathtaking.

Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir watch a montage of themselves, and it’s too much

TwitterFacebook

With sultry routines that’ve long threatened to melt the ice, people can’t help but egg on figure skaters Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir to requite their apparent love.

Following their Winter Olympics gold medal win, Virtue and Moir sat down with CBC to watch a montage of their 20-year career together on the ice.

The pair shed tears as grabs of them talking about how proud they were of one another and images — so many images — of them embracing each other played out on screen.

C’mon and just date each other already, you guys.

It’s not just us either — Adam Rippon and Leslie Jones thought so too. When asked about what’s the deal with their relationship by TODAY’s Hoda Kotb, Virtue gave a rather diplomatic answer to the prodding. Read more…

Adam Rippon just won a different kind of Olympic prize: A spot on NBC

TwitterFacebook

Adam Rippon may be done skating at this year’s Winter Olympics, but thankfully that doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of him.

In addition to winning a bronze medal in the team skating event, the 28-year-old figure skater has made headlines both as one of two openly gay U.S. male athletes competing in Pyeongchang and for speaking up to Vice President Mike Pence in support of LGBTQ rights.

Oh, also for his sass — an element of his personality that will likely be on full display as he spends the rest of the Olympics working as an NBC correspondent.

That’s right, NBC offered Rippon a gig, and according to USA Today Sports he accepted. That means we’ll see his beauty on TV, digital streams, and social media.  Read more…
