‘Deadpool 2’ tries to have it both ways

In typical superhero story fashion, Deadpool 2 begins by robbing its hero of the power that makes him special.
No, not his accelerated healing factor — his ability to surprise.
The first Deadpool felt like a breath of fresh air, a corrective to years of super-serious super-stories. Here, finally, was a superhero who knew he was in a superhero movie, and knew how to play around with the conventions. Here was a guy who could say what we were all thinking, and lots of R-rated things we weren’t.

Jack-of-all-trades Ryan Reynolds shared a letter from his character (and presumably best friend) Wade Wilson, a.k.a. Deadpool, on Wednesday.
In the run up to Deadpool 2 the Merc with a Mouth had a message for his adoring fans.

Deadpool is known for his raunchy humor, but apparently there’s a line that even the fourth-wall-breaking character won’t cross.
Ryan Reynolds, the star of Deadpool 2, told Entertainment Weekly that there was one joke that 20th Century Fox wouldn’t allow in the movie: a joke about Disney. Reynolds co-wrote the movie with writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and he wasn’t exactly happy about the joke being cut.
“This is a sore spot for me because there’s a joke in the movie that is not in the movie now because — I’m probably not even allowed to say this — Fox made me take it out,” Reynolds told EW. “It had more to do with Disney, and they made me take it out. As I look back at it, I think maybe that was a wise decision.” Read more…

Céline Dion recorded a song for the new Deadpool movie because Canadians are nothing if not loyal.
On Thursday, Dion debuted “Ashes,” a soulful piano ballad in her signature style.
Between clips from the movie, part of the video features a costumed Deadpool dramatically ascending the stage and performing contemporary choreography in heels. Today in Hard Same entertainment news, Ryan Reynolds admitted that he never even watched his first superhero movie in full, the 2011 flop Green Lantern.
“Look, I’ve never seen the full final version of Green Lantern,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “I saw a very late stage rough cut of the film.”
The topic came up in an interview promoting the upcoming sequel to Reynolds much more successful superhero franchise, Deadpool. Movie Deadpool’s bar of choice is getting the pop-up treatment ahead of Deadpool 2 hitting theaters next month (h/t The Hollywood Reporter). It’s coming to New York and Los Angeles only, but honestly, LA gets the better deal here.
The New York engagement will happen first, with the pop-up appearing at the Alligator Lounge in Brooklyn from April 26-28. Attendees — who must be 21 or older, obviously — will be treated to free pizza.
Here’s where the NY side of this deal gets lame: Alligator Lounge already serves free slices with every drink. Sure, pizza is a New York thing. But it’s not really a Deadpool thing. It’s a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles thing. Read more…
